I'm in my mid 20s, and have some idea of why it's impossible to identify with my own childhood's entertainment products.When you're talking about video games, or any other youthful interest, the 90s feel like the before times. Everybody recognizes this, regardless of age. The before times actually managed to hang on for a while after 9/11, but were quickly falling apart. By the late 2000s, it was all over, and the era we're still currently stuck in had permanently established itself. Warm, soft, lovable design languages were killed off and replaced with glossy black plastic that's impossible to be fond of. Life still feels like that now, a hyper-real nothingburger. It got worse as time went on, but it's still the same idea. It's impossible to feel nostalgic for the beginning of the end, which happens to be when I came of age. 2010 doesn't exactly register as a comfy thought of a more innocent time, instead it feels foreboding. Feeling nostalgic for a game boy is easy, that was a perfect balance, technology was simple fun that hadn't yet ruined everybody's life. If I don't feel all fuzzy inside when I imagine an iPhone 4, can you blame me? Some people my age can't handle it.I'm just now realizing gen alpha does in fact feel fuzzy when they think of an iPhone 4. God only fucking knows what that's about. People are always going to want to pretend they're older than they actually are, I guess?
