Everyone is terrified of death and signs of aging are just reminders you're going to die eventually, potentially reminders you've wasted your younger years, you're behind in life, etc. Time is the ultimate enemy of humanity and drives core existential dread. You can feel better about how close you are to death because someone else looks closer to it than you even when they're really young, though Carson is a really bad example. It's also just making fun of people for having had genes or not using enough sunscreen/going outside too much.
