The 2016 US election was the turning point where the internet truly and irreparably went to shit. Looking at old stuff from before that period feels like looking at another world.
This. I remember watching filthy frank back then calling people faggots and nigger and all that. If he did Pink Guy/Francis Filth today Joji would get canceled or even worse. Even Idubbzz back then was crazy, remember all the unboxing videos he did. All of the dildos and shit on screen he would get from fans? And all of that was monetized.
>>85730815For me it was 2013 when Disney bought Star Wars
The Internet gradually became more and more embedded in real life. I still hate how "politicians" use Xitter for PR and shilling one ideology or another. But I guess that was inevitable.>>85730832Youtube has cracked down on shit. Just now I was trying to watch this one metal video, and despite being fucking 20 irl (my google account is above 40, because I was once a teenager), the video was still "age restricted". Fucking faggots. Making me angie.
>>85730873Yes it was 2013 but the real answer is gamergate not onions wars
I'm 36. First thing that fucked everything up was 9/11. Before that there had never been a major foreign terrorist attack in a western country. The vibe shift is impossible to explain to a zoomer. People just used to be more open and feel more safe and would let a random stranger in their car or house if they needed help or something. Everyone got way more cautious and closed off after 9/11 and it never went back to the way it was before. Next big thing was probably the 2008 global financial crisis. Huge amount of people lost everything and tons of wealth was transferred from the middle class to the elites. Everything got more corporate after that. You used to have huge amounts of small businesses everywhere. Ever since then you have less and less of that. People are way more cautious about investing their life in a business or the stock market. Now people just want a safe corporate job for the security and it's made everyone less adventurous and ambitious. 2016 Election I would for sure agree was another society wide vibe shift for the worse. Everyone got angrier and at each others throats. Even if you didn't care about politics. Every tech company tried to overcorrect and you had the most draconian censorship on places like YouTube and Twitter. That in turn made the divide even worse. So many people who could have remained apolitical all their life became hard right or hard left. Then you obviously have Covid as the most recent one so I probably don't even have to explain. But again, huge vibe shift for the worse, everything gets shittier, the world gets a little less bright, etc. But I wouldn't say 2016 was the only time this happened, it's happened before, and it's now happened since. It will probably happen again (WW3 with Ukraine and Taiwan?).
>>85731523So things just keep getting worse and never better
>>85731529It's a cycle. The ancient philosopher Polybius noticed that societies tend to "always get worse" but then have some sort of reset where they change the system to let it get worse from a better point. Democracy devolves into monarchy, monarchy devolves into aristocracy, and aristocracy devolves into democracy. A republic like the Romans' or America's has different branches of government that represent all three. Give one too much power, and the cycle starts all over again.Verdict: tax the billionaires.
No it was 2013-2014. Everyone started getting smartphones during these years and everything that required a computer for access became mobile-phone accessible. It opened up a new demographic to the internet and diluted content and culture. 2016 was just the peak of it because politicians and activists infiltrated our peer-to-peer spaces like Twitter and YouTube
