Not true for sales, there's skill involved, but definitely true for managers

Have you ever worked corporate? Lots of companies struggle to appropriately compensate highly talented ICs so they throw a report or two under them and call them a manager so HR can justify giving them a high enough comp package to retain them for their IC work despite the additional layering being detrimental to the org as a whole and them having zero skills in managing people.

End result, lots and lots of people considered a manager when they are really being paid for their other work.

Sales pays well because your work directly and measurably is linked to outcomes that drive top and bottom line, and there is high variation in individual skill.

my dad works in sales and makes approximately 250k a year. He's taken me to work with him before and it's basically just responding to emails, some simple data entry, and then meetings/phone calls with clients like other wagie daycare jobs. With sales (assuming you work for a company and not yourself) you're given a small base salary and then everything you make on top of that is from commission though, so how much you earn is tied more directly to how good you are.
