I don't know what the driver overdosed on, or if the reason for the overdose was different from my initial assumption. Could it have been some suicidal teenager taking pills while driving and accidently hitting someone? Would that be any different from drinking because of depression behind the wheel and hitting someone? Imo it would not. Maybe somebody overdid it on their medication and the effects hit them while driving? That would still fall under negligent behavior by the driver for fucking up their dosage. I can't think of a single scenario that would make me see a reduced sentence as reasonable or benevolent here. All the victim did in this scenario is risk the health and livelihood of pedestrians sooner than the jail sentence would allow.

So I suppose I have to stick with my original answer, the death of the victim would produce a better result for society.
