Unironically, youth. I was an edgy ass kid middle school and most of high school and I hung out with equally edgy people. We never committed any real crimes but it could have easily gone that way if one of us suggested it. I'm not really sure how or why I grew out of it but one day a lack of a moral compass wasn't a point of pride anymore.

When people make fun of this it's because they on some level understand that it's grotesque, but they can't empathize with the victim. It's a defense mechanism to not be able to put yourself in the shoes of what she had to endure for 44 days.
