The answer really is "just be yourself" but that's only a part of it. It's good advice because by being yourself, you ensure that you only attract people that like your authentic self and thus you can be happy not having to put up airs. However, if your authentic self is a mean, nasty person; the pool of people who would be interested in being around you becomes more narrow and likely filled with other mean, nasty people. I also genuinely don't believe that there is anyone that hates a nice person, so the obvious solution here is to just be nice if you want to be happy.
