In England, many towns and cities end with the suffix "-bury": which comes from the Old English "burh", or "burg" meaning fortification or fortified settlement.
The first of these Anglo-Saxon burhs were built in the 9th century on the orders of Alfred the Great, following the Viking invasion of the north of England.
Many burhs were constructed upon pre-existing Roman fortifications, whilst some were constructed completely anew.
His successors continued the construction of burhs and they played a pivotal role in the reconquest of Viking (Danelaw) territory, and the defense of Wessex and Mercia.

i live in kent, but i live closer to london so all of the older people around me have more of a cockney accent.
