This is not true because that would mean every big historical figure, even the most admirable or interesting were worth nothing, which is subjective
I do not think everything any human has ever done is of no merit, so I disagree

Their actions or achievements can be said to have merit, but had they not acted, someone else would.
While this sounds like the bystander effect, I urge you to consider the context in which those historical actions were taken.
When a pivotal moment arises many will try to claim it, are they any more special than others simply because circumstances have landed them there, and are they the only ones who would be capable of seizing that moment.
Now, I agree that there are often few who could seize such a moment at that time, but if we expand our view to both past and future, can we truly say such a person is unique or special?
Surely there were others like them in the past, and there will be other like them in the future.
And perhaps those others would have fared even better.
Does that make them more special, does special means being present at a certain point in time, what makes that point in time different than other points in time?
