New research shows China leads research in 90% of crucial technologies & ignoring this means we're living in a delusional bubble, where we still think the West is the Sci-Tech leader.

I think a lot of people are in denial, or just can't accept that China is already the world's leading nation for science and technology. I can't blame them for their ignorance. Most English-language media studiously avoid mentioning it. Time and time again, I see topics like AI, space & robotics covered, with only developments in Western countries talked of, as if China doesn't exist. Despite the fact that it's now the leader in so many fields.

The problem with complacency and ignorance is that it gives you a really distorted map of reality. You can't understand how the 21st century is developing without factoring in China, and ignoring China means you're being delusional.

Consider the following three scenes.
There is a lawn mower mechanic. He can set the spark plug gap. Clean the air filter. Sharpen the blades. Change the oil. Tune the carb so the air to fuel fix is correct. He can fix the lawn mower but he doesn't understand how all the components come together to make the engine work.
Next is the lawnmower designer. This guy understands how everything on a lawn mower works. Using that knowledge he is able to build a better more efficient mower. He adds an electric start. He reposition the air cleaner so it is less exposed to dust. He redesigns the engine to be more efficient. He even invents a new lawn mower that hovers off the ground rather than using wheels. ( Not all his inventions are great )
Then there is the guy who questions the need to even have a lawn mower. He comes up with several alternative solutions. He genetically engineers a grass that will only grow so high. Or he invents a tiny solar powered drone that senses when a single grass blade is too high and snips it with a scissor like implement, repeating this all day every day. Or he questions why people have grass lawns in the first place and decides to replace it with wild flowers, shrubs, bushes and small trees, letting it grow naturally, with paths snaking in and around the garden.
These are the three categories of scientists. Most belong in the first category, some in the second, and just a very few in the last category.
The Chinese however have none in the last category. They can fix, they can improve, but they can never think outside the box. They can never conceptualize a new idea or a different approach. They can only work with what they already have ( or stolen ).
Also: 99% of all /sci/ posters belong in the first category, watch them seethe.

China might not invent anything new, but it is hellbent on actually building things that the West came up with 80 or 90 years ago and then decided "this is bad for the planet/society". China wants to generate the appearance of a futuristic society and they do that through mega engineering projects, led lights on buildings and flying drone cars etc. etc. etc. They want to generate a spectacle.
>>
>>16960300
>n electric cars, solar panels
Electric cars are not some new scientific discovery, they have existed since the 19th century. Modern versions are better because of lithium batteries and solid state electrronics, all of which were developed in the united states, europe and japan several decades ago, as far as the 1960s for pioneer work with first commercial batteries produced by Sony in the 1990s.
Solar panels have been in research since the 19th century as well, and basically were invented in the west. The record for efficiency is 47%, and was achieved in 2019 the US, in Colorado.
Fusion isnt a commercial technology, so, its basically as irrelevant as whatever mathematicians do these days. Vaporware isnt science.
China is i the same niche as Poland or Mexico, an industrial contractor doing the heavy lifting for western, korean and japanese design companies.
You cant refute this so you have to go with vague insinuations of "china leader" which you cant back.
>>
>>16960414
>At a time when we have just invented AI LLMs
This was not developed in China, BTW. AI has been in research since the 1950s, always in the west, and only got serious thanks to Googles "image search" work. Turned out AI didnt need better ideas, just giant data centers like google (and only google) had at the time.

Infrared light isnt heat and it isnt common light as known at the time, it was something no one had ever seen or perceived at all, which is invisible light. Not the same as heat, which is thermal energy of matter, infrared light is invisible light which is culturally associated with heat as objects at room temperature emit it as blackbody radiation.
No one knew that existed, or that there were any kind of invisible light besides visible light, be it infrared, ultraviolet, radio, etc.
Nothing similar has happened in China, basically in the past 800 years. No original thoughts in science, nothing original or innovative in engineering either. China just has a bunch of factories built with foreign capital.
Electric cars are nothing but the same sad golf carts they have always been. Electric motor, 4 wheels, battery and a circuit board for connections.
Is it innovative just because the battery is heavier and thus it can provide more power?
>>
>>16961492
>Is it innovative just because the battery is heavier and thus it can provide more power?
Yes. You're talking about engineering innovation against scientific innovation here. Batteries aren't new, but producing large ones efficiently and cheaply require innovation.

This is the case with the majority of scientific discoveries: a lot of innovation is done by engineers as they figure out ways to produce something that is physically and economically efficient. The names of said engineers rarely make it to science textbooks, however.
>>
>>16959946
True. They saw the replication crisis and turned it up to 11. The west simply can't compete with this level of Chinese faux output.
>>

>>
>>16961529
>, but producing large ones efficiently and cheaply require innovation.
A large battery isnt innovation. And in any case, the first modern electric cars, which would be Teslas, were developed in the united states. If large battery on a car frame is innovation, then its american innovation, not chinese innovation.

Every country has their things going on. Anything pioneering gets swept up by government and funded covertly until it deemed safe. For example, Russia have a load of stuff on the human body and and strength, Japan have some stuff with dental and the human anatomy, america are trying to put wombs in trannys.... But yeah, China has an insane work ethic from birth and throws people at big problems. It is not a bad thing, yeah, their military will scoop a lot of it up and keep it quiet but they are also doing good things, like many other countries. I'd say most developed countries are about equal but China has more resources and people to chuck at this stuff.

This is the advantage of having a thousands of years old common culture and race. It keeps you stable through bad times.

History has been written by the west with the west at its centre when really the west has only been relevant from the industrial age until now but they think that makes everything else on earth irrelevant. In reality, western civilisation has been a few hundred years of global influence and will end soon. I read that during the American revolutionary wars, China had the highest silver reserves in the world. So while the west was fighting like barbarians, China was civil and prosperous. It's a typical pattern of the western barbarians.

Less energy used for data centres.
Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV): In modern, high-volume microchip manufacturing, EUV systems use a wavelength of 13.5 nm. The industry is also developing next-generation EUV technologies that use shorter 6.7 nm.

At 6.7nm it's nearing a hard limit with printing a computer chip with lithography, features that are too small for the manufacturing process leads to fatal physical and electrical failures.
Short Circuits (Bridging)
Electron Tunneling: At the sub-nanometer scale, insulating layers become too thin. Electrons can spontaneously "leak" across barriers where they aren't supposed to be, causing logic errors and high power drain.

Even theoretical physics research in the west is often reliant on Chinese data because there the ones doing a lot of the experiments.

There are about as many whites on earth as Chinese
>>
>>16994236
Yes, if white people had the numbers, civilisation unity and social discipline of the Chinese as well as no Hebrew yoke around our necks we would be living around Jvpiter in O’Neill cylinders by now.

None of this shit matters if even a single anti-Chinese shill on this board can predict the next of field of science that will change humankind. Will it be in materials research? Will it be in nuclear or quantum physics? Someone please enlighten me, because right now, it seems like humanity has been in stagnation for the past 50 years.

That explains why they invented AI.
Oh wait, they didn't. The USA did.
>>
>>16959946
It's really not that surprising, scientific funding has been starting to dry up in America for a while now and it's hitting high impact research hard while the China keeps investing more and more into R&D.
>>
The future will sadly be dominated by a soulless and culturally deprived China that oversees and traffics western genius and innovation (to steal) to stay on top, because they can’t actually come up with anything on their own, only copying and running things (halfhazardly) for everyone else in soulless fashion.
>>
>>17007437
>because they can’t actually come up with anything on their own, only copying
This was a cope back in the 1860s when the britbongs said similar things about the germs, and its a cope now.
>>
>>17007438
It’s not cope, lul, China can only compete with AI because it has our information on AI. All their companies are copying tech in the west.
>>
>>17007438
They never said such things about the Germs. Isaac Newton’s biggest rival was a German. Germany has only ever put forth intellectuals like Goethe.

Why are YOU coping?
>>
>>17007441
>They never said such things about the Germs
On the contrary it was common aspersion to cast at German science and industry at the time, that they were only merely copying British. The entire reason why manufactured goods typically have "Made in" labels is because British companies insinuated that Germans were only capable of producing inferior knockoffs, and that they needed such labels to "protect" people from "inferior" products.
>>
>>17007445
Both nations accused the other copying, you dingleberry. Nobody copies Chinese shit, because they know it’s inferior.
>>
>>17007438
It's not unique to China, and the US was certainly also a hotbed of intellectual property theft at the beginning of its industrialization (the industrialization age in general) too. What is unique about China is the degree to which the government not only encourages it, but actively uses organs and donors of the state to engage in industrial espionage on such a large, international scale. It is very unusual that a state uses their own spying apparatus to gain not only military and diplomatic advantage, but also to spy on private companies and steal trade secrets, although perhaps not too unusual (national intrigue is national intrigue). Whether that is significantly different is a matter of opinion. But it’s still grossly disingenuous.

China cant develop real time CNC controllers. Their controllers have a level of lag that makes accurate error correction impossible, forcing chinese machine tools to stay in the medium accuracy at a low cost market niche.

China understands that paying for science and education makes scientific advancement happen. The U.S. fed seems to think if they cut every national program and leave it to the market american exceptionalism will somehow extend american domination of the sciences forever, despite the fact that our margin ahead of the USSR and China was always razor-thin.

Its easy to make two parts match with zero external gap, you just have to grind them against each other with some abrasive compound, slather both inside, put some weight on top and tie them to some vibrating machinery. They will fit. Its easy because they are like two halves.
Its more impressive to do these demonstrations with concentric parts, like a straight bar fitting in a hole, usually done with EDM. Those still leave a gap of 0.02 mm. You can also fake them by making them separately (the hole and the pin) and making them to size until you get a fit.
This all takes labor, the idea of the high end machinery is making these parts in minutes with no additional processing like deburring.

It's the opposite in the USA.
