I realize this isn't the actual tank bulkhead/thrust puck or whatever you wanna call it but this still looks so fucking sketchy even if it's just a protective cover. Also from the way the TVC actuators go through it it looks like it forms a pocket with the actual bulkhead which judging from previous flights and the lack of CO2 fire suppression is just begging to fill up with flammable gasses and explode. They probably know what they are doing though.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidden_Figures#Historical_accuracy
>multiple pages long
there's a lot of horseshit and probably more that people have simply been too afraid to call out lol.

naturally, one of the few historical inaccuracies in the movie that actually pissed nogs off was one of the white people acting like a "good person" and removing the no blacks toilet sign, as it made white people look too good and they wanted them to look more evil.

i've seen the movie btw, it's not very interesting and 90% of it is the fake imaginated part of the story where the white people were super autistic about her not being able to go to a segregated bathroom that was closer to where she worked, even though that part was entirely made up.

my guess is they waited to make this until after most of the people involved in apollo were dead, suffering dementia, or too old and tired to bother disputing the horseshit, i'm sure there were some black calculators, but as always reality is substituted with fiction because otherwise it would make black people feel inadequate.

It doesn't matter because Musk refuses to advance to ship chopstick landings until everything goes perfectly with V3. Flight 13 was doomed to be a repeat as soon as 12 had an engine light.

The goal for flight 13 will be to do the engine relight AND no engines out in one go. You can complete all prerequisites in one flight, they just get fucked over by one new random issue every time and have to try again.

No chance in hell they try a booster landing next time. This is the worst booster performance I think I have seen yet, at least Flight 1 had it spinning end over end without exploding.

Ship landings have been so goddamn consistent and accurate (even with an engine out wtf) that I guarantee they could land it on the chopsticks, but they won't because SpaceX doesn't take risks anymore.

I think people are freaking out about the heat shield too much. Last flight the heat shield came out looking amazing. The only thing that is different is the Kaowool crunch wrap they put as a backup between the tiles. It must have turned into a milky chocolate consistency during reentry and smeared itself over the bottom of the booster. We saw similar patterns on the last flight, except they were from the metallic tiles smearing white over the tiles instead of brown. It probably looks just as good as the last flight underneath all that gooey weirdness.

An ICBM, even if we somehow proved that it was conventional, could not carry a fleet worth of cruise missiles, hang in orbit with them until needed, then blast out of orbit at hypersonic speeds before opening the bay and delivering them to within a few dozen miles. Hell, we could use starships to deliver 80+ tons of glide bombs if the targets are cheap and poorly defended.

Successful mission overall. Booster completed ascent, boostback was fubar, booster still survived reentry but hit the water at high speed and exploded. One RVAC shut down early on ascent prompting them to skip the engine relight demo. The ship successfully deployed all of its payload, and successfully maneuvered in orbit. The ship made a successful reentry and splashdown.

Yes. The mission's successful completion is marked at soft splashdown while vertical. After that, physics takes over. The ship exploding when it tipped over was expected.

I haven't seen any footage but there's media reports it did, Bloomberg and such.
Camera feed cut out at altitude, they should have ground based long range cameras with it somewhere.
If it didn't blow up in the sky it completely did hitting the ocean.
The market rules were basically guaranteed, "explodes within 60 mins of coming back down to earth"
They'd written it for a chopsticks landing, splashdown is always going to explode.

There is a video clip higher up in the thread of the engines on the diagram going fucking bonkers for a few seconds before just all shutting off.

No, there's no point bringing the thing back under power if it's just going to explode anyways. You are losing payload capacity for nothing when you do that.

Depends on how fast and loose or dishonest the person you're arguing with with. '69 if the initial proposal, '74 for construction of Enterprise (which would be the inarguable point of demarcation that they didn't start construction of STS until later). '71 is probably the most "correct" year, so ten years between a frozen(ish) design and successful flight. Starship you can't really make a strong argument for prior for 2019 since they were still going with the tailed design made out of carbon fibre back in 2018 until Elon, in probably the most consequential decision of the whole program did pic related to the tooling. Then the stainless steel testing began the next year.

>>16984406
No. They just need to find out what happened on stage separation and if that had anything to do with the RVac explosion. Solve those and this would have been classified as a perfect launch since they could have hit every planned objective. As others have pointed out, the next launch would (will) have had the same profile as this one since Elon wouldn't chance a catch on a singular data point. Come back in two months and see what happens then. If they get the relight, the landings, no engine out, and deployment, then two months after that they might be forced to do an orbital insertion due to their obligations to NASA. If that goes off without an issue, then it'll go back to trying for a catch. Then eventually by then both towers should be fully upgraded (IIRC), which means they can start planning for orbital refueling since everything needed to do it is there.

Billions over budget, decades behind schedule, no path to a workable launch vehicle and a classic victim of diminishing returns thanks to the Tsiolkovsky rocket equation, millions of man hours wasted, billions in US tax dollars wasted, countless wildlife destroyed and damaged, and look what your precious Elon Cuck has done.....nothing. Not at all. The failures and disasters you are attributing (for the most part) are one-off anomalies that hadn't been seen before because no one has done this before, or are self-inflicted due to an abundance of caution or limitations on reality.

I'll give you an example. F9 failed 19 times before they had a successful landing, which was then followed by several failures. If F9's success was wholly dependent on the reuse of the booster, you would be forced to admit that it failed more times than any other rocket development program over a longer period of time. But you won't do that because it's ridiculous. Each time Starship gets into space, they don't go for orbit because... What if they can't get it back down? What if it explodes? What if they lose control? It /possibly/ won't do those things, but you are talking to the same company that had 19 boosters not land on a pad in the ocean on their much simpler project. You want to take those odds? Why don't they go for an RTLS every time? Because they keep changing the design, and they only have the one tower currently. SpaceX knows what happens when a booster or a ship explodes on critical infrastructure: no flights for half a year or more. Are you going to take those odds? What about the whole engine out situation? Yeah, it's a first flight of essentially a new engine that they have no way of testing to the full extent until flight because there's no other way to simulate 33 of the things all screaming hot death next to one another while they fly up to space for a full duration. We're talking about scales of difficulty, risk aversion differences, and overall limitations on the program. If no one gave a fuck if Elon got the single biggest thing ever put into space stuck in LEO, I am sure he'd go for orbit on every launch. If he had a dozen working pads and towers, he'd probably go for RTLS on every launch. If this was a frozen engine design that was extremely mature? It'd be weird if they blew up.
>>
>>16984612
The difference is that Falcon 9 was a successful rocket getting things into the orbit while they were fiddling with the booster. Falcon 9 missions weren't failures despite the booster crashing because they got things into orbit which is the point of a rocket. Starship launches are all failures because they achieve nothing except big explosions.

>Falcon 9 missions weren't failures
Uh-huh.
>>
>>16984619
The booster's job is completed on ascent. Anything going wrong after staging doesn't count by this measure. The ship's job is more complicated and they've got a lot of R&D they're trying to get done with reentry control and heat shield development, and they have not made orbit a goal in any flight thus far.
>>
>>16984612
I do agree that Starship is doing stuff beyond the typical fire and forget rocket, and that by those metrics the recent flight could be considered a sucess or only partial failure depending on the specifics of the achieved trajectory with an engine out.
I would say Starship development is fundamentally different from F9. F9 had a beautiful elegance where it was designed as an expendable rocket, and reuse testing was a bonus done on commercial flights, costing them very little. Starship by comparison NEEDS reuse to work. a Starship where the booster and orbiter are not reusable is an abject failure because it will be too expensive.
>>
>>16984623
Again booster landing failures are irrelevant if they are putting commercial satellites into the orbit on schedule and unharmed. Even early Falcon 9 carried commercial loads with good enough reliability for third parties to trust their extremely expensive satellites to them.

>>16984624
>Anything going wrong after staging doesn't count by this measure.
If you are putting things into orbit, which starship isn't doing. Reusable booster is only useful if you are putting things into orbit. Otherwise it's a net negative for the mission because it lowers delta-v.
>>
>>16984630
>If you are putting things into orbit, which starship isn't doing. Reusable booster is only useful if you are putting things into orbit. Otherwise it's a net negative for the mission because it lowers delta-v.
It lowers delta-V on Falcon during its R&D program too. Starship met its payload and trajectory goals, in spite of an engine-out on both stages. In regards to Delta-V costs, they are no different.
>>
>>16984619
Before you become disingenuous: if the point of F9 wasn't partial reuse, would we be here talking about the absolute market dominance that SpaceX has or would we be talking about how they're just old space owned by a car guy? Because without the magic words of "partial reuse" you don't get rock bottom launch prices, and <insert stupid high number of reuses> on Booster #420YOLOSWAG. You don't get Ariane seething themselves into oblivion. You don't get ULA crumbling. You don't get RUSCOSMOS being relegated to a thing no one even talks about anymore. You don't get the entire Chinese launch market springing up out of the ground with a dozen companies all trying to make a F9 clone. So, yes, they were failures. They put a payload into space. Who gives a shit? That's been happening since Sputnik.
>>
Looking back Zubrin was so right.
All this malarkey of trying to test Raptor and heat shield could have been done on the cheap if they had built a mini starship upper stage for Falcon 9. Who cares if they can't reach orbit with useful payload, it would be a very useful x-plane and would have given them a head start in making shit that actually works before assembling the full scale starship.
>>
>>16984632
>It lowers delta-V on Falcon during its R&D program too.
Yes but that doesn't matter when get this... they were putting satellites in orbit regardless. Starship isn't doing that.

>>16984634
>if the point of F9 wasn't partial reuse, would we be here talking about the absolute market dominance that SpaceX has or would we be talking about how they're just old space owned by a car guy?
Again Falcon 9 was doing successful missions despite blowing up boosters. Starships is not doing that.
>Who gives a shit? That's been happening since Sputnik.
Because get this... Starship can't do this thing that has been done since Sputnik.
>>
>>16984634
Musk was alwyas promising full reuasability of Falcon 9, but in reality Falcon 9 was designed as an expendable rocket. it was a happy coincidence that the engine clustering, which was done to save money, permitted propulsive landing.
>>
>>16984639
>Because get this... Starship can't do this thing that has been done since Sputnik.
Except it can you stupid ass. Are you truly arguing that Starship cannot make it into orbit as opposed to SpaceX not being retards and keeping orbit off the table until they are certain (reasonably) nothing fucking weird is going to happen? Because again. It's the biggest thing ever put into space. Would you, in Elon's shoes, push Starship into orbit after weighing the risks or would you just keep it suborbital for the time being? It should be on its face obvious to you that Starship can get to orbit, that hasn't been the problem nor the concern. The problem and the concern has always been what the fuck the blowback looks like if it won't come down. They've even shown multiple times now that with their ghetto door they can put payloads into orbit should they burn the thrusters just a little bit more.
>>
>>16984630
>booster landing failures are irrelevant if they are putting commercial satellites into the orbit on schedule and unharmed
The goal of these tests isn't to deploy satellites, it's to develop a massive reusable rocket that will trivialize the cost of transporting mass into space.
If I used the metric that a rocket launch is only successful if it has a net-zero environmental impact, then all Falcon 9 launches so far would all count as a failure.
>>
>>16984639
Almost as if the company that already has Falcon 9 to put operational sats into orbit is the same one that's developing Starship, so they can iterate the designs of things that made Starship special.
>>
>>16984644
Elon isn't blowing hundreds of millions for fun. If they could get someone to trust a satellite to be carried up by Starship they would but they can't.

>>16984646
Having money to blow doesn't mean blowing money up in smoke isn't a waste and a failure. Falcon 9 was carrying commercial payloads while they were testing the booster. That's what makes it not a failure while the Starship is a failure.
>>
>>16984641
>Musk was alwyas promising full reuasability of Falcon 9
It was an aspiration, anon. Not a promise.
And they shifted from full reusability to first-stage reusability after it became clear that this was more economically (and technically) feasible .
>>
>>16984648
>Elon isn't blowing hundreds of millions for fun. If they could get someone to trust a satellite to be carried up by Starship they would but they can't.
Starship isn't designed to carry anything except Starlinks right now. Nobody's got a satellite that fits in the Pez Dispenser mechanism and they've allocated no visible manufacturing resources into a proper door.

They can't because you can only ever do one thing at the same time.
It's like trying to eat and walk at the same time. Or listening to music while exercising. It simply can't be done.
>>
You call this a success?
>>
>>16984685
Absolutely. The ship's not supposed to survive tipping over, and it's not supposed to avoid tipping over after splashdown.
>>
>>16984685
It depends on your criteria of success.
Was the goal of the mission to not have the rocket explode after it simulated a landing? If so, it wasn't a success.
If the goal was anything else, then the explosion has no effect on whether the test was a success or not.

What exactly could we do with a moonbase? Besides it just being cool (which it is), what would be the purpose of something so expensive and difficult to maintain?
>>
>>16984862
depends on how big the moonbase is. early on, it will only be useful for contesting territory and scientific endeavor.
>>
>>16984850
mumbai wouldnt even notice
>>
>>16984862
There are three completely free resources on the moon: sunlight, matter and a lack of strong gravity.
The first few moonbases on the moon will serve no function. They'll do nothing but host a few people for months at a time while they do some inconsequential scientific experiments.
But after we've transported enough matter to the moon, they can start to function as a method to kickstart automated mining, smelters and factories.
And once those facilities are in place, we can pretty much churn out rockets and rocket fuel for free.

Stuff like this advances exactly like what we're seeing with AI. It starts with very tiny changes over many decades, then suddenly the speed picks up and we've advanced a thousand times as much in just a single year.
i give it 30 years until rocket tickets are just as commonplace (if a bit more expensive) as airplane tickets.
