Uhh, because we can literally see them. Humanity has directly photographed two supermassive black holes, while observatories have detected roughly 300 black hole collisions. In addition to mergers, astronomers have spotted about 50 individual stellar mass black holes in the Milky Way by observing Xrays emitted as they pull material from companion stars. There are about 40 quintillion calculated black holes in the observable universe.
