12 replies and no one asked the one question that matters....WHAT TYPE OF TELESCOPE DID YOU BUY!? Most amateur telescopes won't see much of shit besides The Moon and a few very small distant planets. I got a massive 8" dobsonian telescope because I wanted to actually have a good view of Jupiter and Saturn. The Moon looks amazing with it like I'm in orbit over the Moon itself. I can see Saturn's rings, the moons of Jupiter look like blazing stars around the planet and I swear once I saw the Red Spot on Jupiter.

Here is a good free website for planning your nightly viewing. You can input your location and advance the clock to future times and see what will be in the sky and where and what time it rises and sets based on your personal location.

Anything outside our solar system will be underwhelming even with my large telescope. If you ever get a few thousand to blow on a telescope to heavy to carry in one piece get a dobsonian telescope 12" or more and you'd be shocked what you can see. Dobsonian style telescopes are the best to get for true optical observation and I've messed around with some cameras attached to it and nothing can capture close to what my eye sees in detail and color so physically observing the celestial bodies is the way to go and really get that "raw dog" feeling.

Picture is from my 8" Dobby taken with an $80 android potato cam with no mount. I altered the levels to show the central craters more hence the white blown out near the edge of the moon. Like I said it looks 100 times better to the naked eye but just to give you an idea of the magnification and with the right eyepiece I could get 2 or 3 times more "zoom"

Have you guys noticed all those high rise apartments in big cities with telescopes in the window?

The light pollution in a big city is enormous, you aint seeing any stars, that telescope is for snooping through peoples windows

Didn't ask because I assumed the answer was obvious.

Telescopes are like dicks - if you mention them without bringing up size it's because it's small enough to be embarrassed about.
