I think it's a silly thing to say. It's like asking, "What's the point of doing science if there's always someone better than me?" Or, "What's the point of playing football because Tom Brady exists?" Or, "What's the point of playing basketball because of Michael Jordan?"

You could say that about anything you go into or choose to study. There's always going to be someone who's the best, and chances are you're not going to be the best in the world. That's pretty rare.

But understanding that, you can still be as good as your effort and ability allow, and end up contributing significantly. There are so many different territories out there, so many different types of mathematics. It's not like Terence Tao is so good that he just takes over mathematics and no one else is able to do anything. That's not the case.

There are tons of different aspects of mathematics that are open for continued study, including what Terence Tao is studying. Even in those areas, there's still room for someone new to come in with a fresh set of eyes and discover things.
