1. A Martian colony is vastly harder than anyone admits.
Elon and the Mars enthusiasts make it sound like we're one big reusable rocket away from turning Mars into a second Earth. Reality: We are not even close to solving the fundamental problems of Radiation, Gravity, and Dust.
2. The "self-sustaining" claim is science fiction. Realistic timelines suggest that for the next 50–100+ years, any Martian settlement will be completely dependent on Earth.
3. The economics are terrible. Mars is a money black hole. It's basically a giant philanthropic/science project dressed up as frontier capitalism.

I don't know what they are trying to do. Even if it teaches them something about survival on another planet, it's going to be voided out with new tech.
>>
Honestly a lunar colony makes more sense as a starting point. They're both instantly deadly but the moon is much closer, and people can get there in days rather than a year at the minimum. The moon might be a harsh mistress, but one will find that Mars is an utter BPD bitch who isolates you from your family and friends.

I don't know how people keep deluding themselves into thinking humans can survive on Mars or even the Moon with our current technology.

If your oxygen recycling system fails, you dead.

If your pressure regulation system fails, dead.
Damaged your spacesuit? Dead.
Accidentally inhaled Martian dust? Dead.
Exposed to too much solar radiation? Dead.

Mars can be colder than Siberia at night. If your temperature regulation system fails, dead.

Water recycling systems fails? Dead.
Run out of food? Dead. (And good luck trying to grow anything on Mars btw).
Electricity generator fails? Dead.
