It is technically infeasible to go to mars without a mars transfer vehicle which is basically a multistage rocket that needs to be constructed in low earth orbit. That giant ass fuck huge heat shield on the front is for aerobraking a method where we achieve martian orbit by using mars atmosphere to save fuel.
>>
to get my munbase to the mun in ksp, i built transfer vehicles that i named "Strap-ons"
it took three of them to do it and have enough delta v to dispose of them back on kerbin

Question: if you go with an Orion design here you could probably use the bumper plate for aerobraking too?

Anon, we're two weeks away from Kessler syndrome.
Nobody's gonna reach LEO in the near future.

The moonbase is the smarter way to do it because of the tremendous shielding required to survive a direct hit from a Carrington-class solar flare, which current proposed designs seem to all lack.

Kessler syndrome is a meme that just ups the launch requirement to heavily armored rockets and makes launching much less economical.
>>
Yes and it has to be reusable

ok, but how do we propel the Moon to Mars without sounding like a mad scientist?

Build the Mars rocket on the mun base'd moar biglier n' shield'd than in orbit or on Earth, Chungus.

ok, but do we build it upside down to push the Moon, or do we anchor a super duper strong chain to pull it?

Getting to mars will require nuclear thermal or fusion.

The logistics of sending humans on a year long trip to deep space are ridiculous.

I also think its a pointless mission, as the near earth asteroids have actual economically useful resources.

I think you can one-shot to Mars from Earth or LEO with only chemical rockets if you don't care about the astronauts potentially dying from solar radiation; it's just less practical and efficient. With enough shielding to ride out a big flare though, nuclear power and launching from the moon are two options that are probably best combined but likely either sufficient to overcome weight problems with a one-shot from Earth/LEO.

They will use NEP
