As I begin learning abstract math its unclear how to apply it to the real world, or if what I'm learning is even improving my understanding of the topic at hand

>>17006880math does not describe the real world. But you can apply it to the real word. There are infinit possible equstions, some of them accuratly describe what is happening. E.g. you obseve something ist spreading out. You can describe that as a quadratic function. That does not mean that it IS a qudratic function. A quadraritic fuction can only be used to discribe that grow.
