I believe people see the kind of person they want to become in the character they like
This kinda creates the difference between larping and being obsessed
You see let's go over it with an example
Agnes Tachyon, a mad scientist who seeks for potentials over the limits of umamusume's body
I'm a fan of her (more than the anime, the game, tachyon IRL and etc), and I can confirm I'm quite obsessed to this character because I see the kind of person I want to become in her (studying advanced chemistry and becoming a pharmacist while enjoying this path as much as possible)
But then a thought Crossed my mind
What if tachyon is not me, but she's the exact opposite of me?
I want to become her but I have a LOOOOONG way
Because I'm quite her opposite
I don't have her confidence, I don't have her motivation, I don't have anything she has, I only share a liking of chemistry and that's it
But then I thought about her rival, jungle pocket, a character I kinda hated, but then I realized the character I never liked (and I still don't like) and I always ignored, was... Literally me
She was literally me
We were the opposite of the person we both got obsessed to
Thus I believe there's lots of reasons for obsessing fictional characters but the main one shall be the obsession to become someone better
The greed to have more, that's what makes you obsessed to something that's quite your opposite, without you even realizing
And I think it can cause serious problems if it is taken TOO far
But as long as you see it as a motive to become better it's actually extremely healthy
Being obsessed is not about gooning to your fav's hentais and R34s
It's about becoming her, not dreaming about it, going for it
That's how obsession takes over your determination and makes you sacrifice everything to become who you shall be, for her
And that is WAY BETTER than being obsessed to a real person

The only conceptual difference between a "fictional character" and "real character" is if you can touch the real character. Women on the streets for all intents and purposes may as well be video game NPC's (hostile ones at that) for the 80% virgin population segment. At least fictional characters usually have a good personality and look nice so they win on that department. It's then not all that difficulty to imagine that some people develop obsessions to them.
It's mostly the same as obsessing over a music celebrity, you can attend a concert or listen to a CD and it makes it feel like you are interacting with said celebrity more than a real person who isn't giving you anything to work with.

These people don't have the playbook and quality needed for roleplaying with other people to solve problem together, which eventually fails to meet the real expectations of social function and therefore has no nothing to make demands with.
An image and statue doesn't really set expectations and demands as a living being wanting to live would, and react to not meeting the demands by being more caring, persistent, aggressive, or evasive.
The such failure results in neglect or abuse.
An image is a pretty scenic place to visit and gather but a dangerous ground to stay on and build upon. You can catch a ride out of there with people who also love the same image but seems to have a better social life elsewhere to see your options.

survival, because the myths/legends/stories held the meta for surviving in the world, and not destroying yourself, your family and your people.
