Pretty impressive. Conceptually I like this lot more than the back at launch pad concept space X has going since capturing it down range should at least mitigate the large losses from reusability somewhat and the net capture looks pretty nice. You don't have to be as precise with it like you do with the fork and at the same time it reduces the weight on the actual rocket since it doesn't need legs or anything.

>>17014036honest question: is there really any benefit to reusing rocket hardware?most systems likely have to be completely overhauled and/or rebuiltis there really an economic incentive to the exercise?
>>17014105It gets grabbed by a net.>>17014107The theory is pretty solid. The motors are the most expensive part of the rocket so if you can reuse them with little or no refurbishing then you can make a profit. There's the downside of lower capacity to orbit since you have to waste some of the fuel to land but if things work out as advertised then it's a net positive. While I don't really trust SpaceX on this they have at least managed the reusability to the degree of sending up the same booster many times. Whether that's actually better than simply making more rockets from pure economic standpoint is up for some debate but I think it does all line up on the black. I think if SpaceX just launched falcons without reusability they would still be doing good in todays market for instance so it's not a huge game changer by any means and if it has paid back the development costs yet is another question but certainly todays reusable rocket is somewhat cheaper than non reusable one even adjusted for payload.
>>17014111i meant to also point out the fuel needed to land the thing reduces payload size, so thanks for bringing that up
>>17014036Clay animation.
>>17014041Idiot
Give me a reason why this isn't better than SpaceX's chopsticks catch?>cables can stretch and multiple points of weight distribution so it can catch more weight>larger hit zone so it can be less precise in landingAll this seems to contribute to less explosions, blowing up the launch pad and the tower which costs a shit ton of company.
>>17014143Chopsticks can probably handle heavier rockets than cables.
>>17014143It is better, though I suppose the trade off is that you need a more complex landing pad so if the rocket does blow up you are down further. There's also the chance that the cables or the catching systems at large fails since it does have more moving parts but that's pretty slim all things considered.
>>17014143I think they're basically equivalent in the sense that they both eliminate heavy landing legs that weigh down the rocket. Cables have greater margin of error which is good when you're on a barge that could undergo some rocking due to wind and waves.
>>17014111>It gets grabbed by a net. How? I cannot see any net in the video, and somehow the rocket does not tip over.Doubt.
>>17014145Kek, no. Chopsticks require three dimensions of stability, cables require only two. Chopsticks are solid undeformable masses, their load distribution is dependent on stiffness and yield. Cables are uniform and always center the load if you've got a single slipring. Their yield is easy to calculate as you're only measuring force in one dimension. The biggest bridges with the heaviest loads are all cable bridges and suspension bridges
>>17014044the barge seems to be moving and I wonder why would they do that
>>17014308You can see it pretty clearly in the OP image. It's just some cables not very easy to see in the video.>>17014454I think it's just trying to maintain position against the current and wind.

it's using a net lmao, how pathetic, i actually thought it was falcon 9 tier
>>17014036It's a solid concept which can be refined with elastic rubber bands instead of the catching metal wires, in order to maximize reusability by rebounding the rocket up into orbit with Hannah&Barbera physics.

SpaceX rockets and capsules are generally uninsured for physical damage. Instead, SpaceX self-insures its own launch vehicles, meaning the company absorbs the cost if a rocket is lost. This strategy makes sense because they mass-produce their rockets and reuse them. That sticks it to commercialism.
>>17014036You could make multiple platforms of chopsticks and cables and determine which one the booster goes to according to how many booster rockets are still functioning after separation.
>>17014599That's pretty cool
>>17014041it's just low fps my good retard
>>17014107Reusable boosters are a no-brainer if you can do it. Boosters get jettisoned long before the rocket reaches orbital velocity, so they don't need a delicate heat shield to survive the return.Moving to methane engines also means a lot less soot inside the engine, allowing more flights before you need to swap out engines and send them off for refurb.

Maybe.
Reminder that belittling your enemies' achievements by using their previous missteps, which are a necessary evil in the process of improvement, is a very russian thing to do that leads down the path of underestimation and ultimately unpreparedness. They're signs of a decaying society, focused on defending a frail ego more than facing the future with a grounded perspective.
