basically the way I understand it is mathematics are logical systems that are inherently abstract. Just so happens to overlap with a lot of things in reality

The foundation of math is logic. If you take ANY consistent set of rules that don't contradict each other (i.e. pass the very basics of logic) you can develop a mathematical system on it. Math is a good tool to analyze the universe because the universe runs on consistent rules. When math fails to analyze a phenomenon it means that we misunderstood one or more of the rules, and new science is made
