>build particle accelerator to discover supersymmetric particles>supersymmetric particles are nowhere to be found>they try to spin it as "we discovered that we can't discover them, this is the biggest discovery in particle physics ever!!!"why are they like this? just admit the experiment was a failure
>>17017055>>build particle accelerator to discover supersymmetric particles>>supersymmetric particles are nowhere to be foundyes>they try to spin it as "we discovered that we can't discover them, this is the biggest discovery in particle physics ever!!!"nowe should be spending 1000x as much on particle accelerators btw
>We just wasted billion of dollars. This is great!
the portal is openthis is what really matters
>>17017136>wastedwhen you're looking for something and you search your room not to find the thing you're looking for, was that wasted time?is it better to sit idly or to do something towards the goal?is knowing where the thing you're looking for is not worthless?
>>17017055The whole purpose of being an experimentalist is to prove the theoreticians wrong and make them cry. This was a resounding success and I hope we spend $1 trillion more so we can finally drive out the string theorists.
>>17017197Isn't string theory designed so that no experimentalist can ever disprove it even millennia into the future?
>>17017055the particle accelerator was built to discover the higgs boson, which it did. stop lying.
>>17017197higgs was happy tho but u cant always win
>>17017213then why didn't they shut it down in 2012?
>>17017250Because then it would have been a waste of money. It was already built. May as well see what else might be found. The quark gluon plasma was found. With higher luminosity (relatively inexpensive upgrades), data can be more precisely found. This is useful for stress testing theories. If one theory requires a higgs of 123 GeV, then 125±2 GeV is in this range but 125.27±0.04 GeV is not, and thus the theory is invalidated.
>>17017055>string theorists did this
>>17017142
>>17017055>to discover supersymmetric particleslol, yeah I'm sure the story about doing research for the sake of knowledge is why rich people spent billions of dollars.I'm sure they weren't seeking anything useful for a new superweapon or anything like that.
>>17017155It's one thing to look for something you know can be found because it exists. Like you don't spend a billion dollars for a Santa Claus tracking system.
>>17017197>The whole purpose of being an experimentalist is to prove the theoreticians wrong and make them cry. This was a resounding success
>>17017136This is the same hack that tried to tell people that wolves fixed the ecology of Yellowstone Park.
