SLS is being worked around and phased out because it's infinitely more of a dead end than Starship can ever hope to be. It would have been unambitious and outdated even if delivered as promised, and now it's nothing more than the most expensive LEO truck in history.

>>17020496
Starship would be revolutionary for cost-to-lunar-surface if it works. If. I'd say it's worth the risk and investment NASA has made. Nothing so far has indicated their goals are technologically infeasible, only very difficult.

For now, New Glenn is unironically the best hope in the medium term. Modern but not bleeding-edge, cost-effective and scalable, and actually works.

>>
>>17021359
yes that is the point, with autonomy a 30k car is going to make so much more money than a similar car that is sold to people and it should eventually be basically cheaper to the users as well
why? because of utilization, personal vehicles are parked most of the time, a robotaxi can drive around most of the day and night if need be

>>17021397
I like driving (outside the cities)
>>
>>17021359

this whole idea of increasing utilization is retarded and a false economy. consider the following:
>consumer cars already get used to the end of their mechanical life
>most of the cost of owning a car is already incremental: gas/electricity and insurance
>a good chunk of cars are on the road at the same time every weekday morning and afternoon

even if you could distribute everyone's commute such that a few cars could work nonstop, you gain nothing; the number of cars needed is still the amount of driving required divided by the lifespan of each car. if you can make cars cheaper and last longer, you can win regardless of whether they're rented or owned; and if you can't, there's no point to any of this.

a time related deprecation exists and separately and more importantly, there is a cost of capital

>>
>>17021426
great, so now that we've moved the goalposts from the ridiculous statement made by the anon I was replying to to something more realistic, we can ask the real question: does the savings in depreciation outweigh the cost of driving the empty taxi between assignments and other taxi-specific costs, while providing enough profit margin to justify it as a business model? and if so, by how much - would it be a transportation revolution, or a slightly cheaper but still fairly expensive uber alternative?

Teslas and electric cars in general really fuck up how anyone perceives "age" in a vehicle.
In theory you do want some type of extra utilization on an electric vehicle because the primary ageing factor is literally just calander age when on most other vehicles it's a mixture of usage and calander age.

EVs are mechanically simple but the battery has a timeclock as does some of the more advanced electronics.
10 years in it really doesn't matter how many miles you put on it. 100k miles versus 300k won't matter nearly as much compared to an ICE vehicle. 20 years in and the car is junk no matter the miles.

In theory if you are not on a trajectory to rack up hundreds of thousands of miles within the first few years of ownership then you're underutilizing the car. It's wasting away with each year.
>>

just retarded speculation

/sfg/?
>>
>>17021634
>just retarded speculation
Tesla's see anywhere from 1.5% to 2.5% degradation each year.
That's anywhere from 30%-50% capacity gone.
You might even be alright with the capacity loss but the bigger problem is constant cell imbalance as some will age worse than others. It would only take a few worse ageing cells to greatly increase that 30-50% natural loss as the BMS is going to limit the battery by the weakest cell.

I would really like to be proven wrong, but the prognosis isn't great at 20 years. 10 years on an EV will likely be perfectly fine, 15 years if it ages well but 20 is really uncharted territory.
>>
>>17021672

you sound retarded bro
>>
>>17021611
Even with modern battery times like LFP charging cycles are the primary cause of EV batteries aging out, not time. And EV batteries are not a fixed component of the car.

SpaceX (grokX scam+rockets) chart looks identical to a shitcoin scam chart. Who would have thought buying into a super low floated shares+impossibly high market cap would end badly. This is the tradfi equivalent of a bunch of whales hoarding a majority of the token supply and dumping on new buyers.

If SpaceX had IPOd as just SpaceX without all the Ai slop shit bolted on it probably would have been a buy. As it is, baggies will be holding that shit down to who knows how low as reddit grok bleeds billions yearly and is not even close to being compensated by SpaceX revenue.

It was genius to bundle his catastrophic loss businesses with the one thing that people actually want to buy, he must be making a fortune dumping on these morons.

This random paper was posted this month, following up some "Dyson sphere" candidate stars. There used to be an anon here who went on an on about these things. The apparent infrared excesses were wrong, confused in the original low resolution data.

>Elon Musk may be the most powerful man in the world. He’s worth almost $1trn, runs Tesla and SpaceX, boasts an enormous social-media following and, to top it all off, he reckons he’s pretty good at predicting the future, too.
>For his first extended interview since SpaceX’s blockbuster IPO, Mr Musk sits down with Zanny Minton Beddoes, The Economist’s editor-in-chief, at his Texas Gigafactory to talk about what he thinks this future holds. They discuss the timeline for AI overtaking human intelligence, the rapid progress of China, the reasons for his interest in Europe and why he thinks he “got a little too involved” in politics.

>NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman spoke to an influential group of House Republicans on Wednesday
>Isaacman has said in the past that the agency “does not have a topline problem” — pointing to the nearly $25 billion Congress gave the agency in 2026, plus $10 billion in the reconciliation package passed last year.
>Rep. Brad Knott (R-N.C.), who was at the meeting, said he believed Isaacman is “the only member that came before us that has ever said we do not need any more money.”
>“He’s got such a vision for how to achieve space dominance, to compete with adversarial nations and the Chinese Communist Party, to bring American pride into the space race and to do it at a cost that is reasonable,” Pfluger said in an interview after the meeting.
>Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a long time advocate for space exploration, also attended the lunch. Pfluger added that Gingrich gave credit to Isaacman and President Donald Trump for leading the charge into space.

Mars is a means, not the final mission

Musk says his deeper goal has always been to preserve and extend consciousness. Settling Mars is one way to do that, not the ultimate objective. He now sees advanced AI as essential to humanity’s long-term future and expansion beyond Earth.

Why SpaceX went public

Musk says public ownership allows ordinary people to invest in SpaceX. As a private company, it could only have a limited shareholder base; going public broadens participation in its growth and space ambitions.

AI data centres in orbit

Musk argues that AI infrastructure will eventually need to move into space: “The only place you can really scale is space.” Future AI may require terawatts of power, making Earth-based power stations, grids and data centres harder to expand. Space offers vast solar energy, while SpaceX can provide launch and orbital infrastructure for xAI’s computing needs.

SpaceX and xAI as one system

Musk presents space and AI as increasingly integrated. SpaceX supplies rockets, spacecraft and orbital infrastructure; xAI creates demand for huge computing capacity; and Tesla robots could handle physical work while orbital AI handles digital tasks. The result is a network of rockets, satellites, computing systems and autonomous machines.

Starlink as strategic infrastructure

The Ukraine discussion shows that SpaceX is no longer just a launch company. Starlink has become critical infrastructure used by governments and militaries. Musk’s political views on the war are separate from Starlink’s operational role.

The philosophical end point

Musk links his companies to broader questions about consciousness and the universe, including the possibility that reality is a simulation created by an alien civilisation. SpaceX is therefore not only about reaching Mars, but about extending the lifespan, reach and understanding of consciousness.

>Amazing reading from Ars Technica with some great information about the latest tile test results from Starship flight 10. Metal tiles did not prove to be a good option hence the heavy oxidation seen after re entry with most of the ship turning external tank orange. The nose section of the ship had a large white patch this was caused by heat seeping between the tile gaps and eroding the underlying material. Flight 11 should be a little different and we could see a complete thermal protection system. One area was seen not suffering much damage this area was made up of 3 layers an Ablative base a material likely Pyron next a layer of Kaowool (ceramic fibre insulation) on top of this is a new material called crunch wrap and will be used under the tile with extra material on each of the tiles side faces folded around and cut flush once installed.

It dropped a bit in after-hours, but the market had closed before the launch started. Even after-hours ended right as the ship was landing.

It might move when the market opens on Monday, but overall I don't think this launch was eventful enough to overcome other market forces in either direction. It was a good step and all, but we really need to see a big milestone like full orbit and/or ship catch, or at least another booster catch.

Can we address the elephant in the room? How come they perfected booster catch for Falcon 9 but failed repeatedly to soft land the starship one on the ocean?
>inb4 V3 is new
Not an excuse, V3 is supposed to be an improvement of the previous versions, so much failure is unacceptable

>>
>>17024536
>falcon 9
>booster catch
I will just assume you meant booster landing. There is an entire compilation video of F9 boosters crashing made by SpaceX. As for Starship they have already caught the booster more than once and are now testing the V3 version which clearly has some bugs in it but is a minor hurdle in the grand scheme.
>so much failure is unacceptable
To whom? All hurdles to orbital flight have been cleared. Starships can now fly payloads regardless of what happens to the booster.
>>
>>17024536
>but failed repeatedly to soft land the starship
they aren't trying to soft land the starship
they have the ship "land" on simulated chopsticks that only they know if it's successful or not
presumably once they have enough data on how the ship reacts after reentry and flip and are satisfied they aren't steering a massive bomb into a very valuable launch pad they will do a catch
it would be cool if they attempt to catch the ship next test rather than the booster, but that would require actual orbital speeds
maybe given the successful relight this is on the table

Just need tighter QC for heatshields. Whats happening is heat gets into the pockets in between various bad heat shield placements, and then pressure builds up from under neath those.

This is also proving that some failure is okay. As these dont turn into catastrophe. However if they tighten the quality contorl on heatshield placement, they can likely fix that issue for good.

Obviously, I wish they were moving faster, but you are not making any sense. Catching a Starship is a lot harder than landing a Falcon 9 booster. V3 seems to be the one, anyway. I assume flight 16 will be a Starship catch attempt.

I don't think orbital is the real milestone, as long as the raptors work they could easily achieve that by prolonging the burn.
What they are really testing is the ability to reignite the engines and the reentry of both vehicles, they don't need a full orbit for that.

They do, sometimes. See the pre-open spread on the very first day that SpaceX traded.
People were offering to buy at $85,000 per share, and to sell at $0.01 per share
Now, none of these were ever filled because people canceled them before the market opened.
This is an extreme case but you do get this reversed case pretty often with normal stocks when the market is closed. People bidding high and offering low, as a way to test the waters and see how high or low other people are willing to go.

> Intentional Sinking: The standard protocol for these ocean splashdown tests is to open the ship's valves, vent the remaining gasses, and allow the vehicle to fill with water and sink to the ocean floor. If it does not sink naturally, SpaceX uses internal charges or the Flight Termination System (FTS) to breach the tanks and submerge it
> Logistical Impossibility: Starship is a massive, 165-foot-tall stainless-steel spacecraft. Safely hoisting a waterlogged, structural shell of that size onto a recovery vessel in the middle of the rough Indian Ocean is not logistically feasible or worth the extreme expense.

At the edge of the plume it interacts with oxygen and other elements in the thin atmosphere.
