Now that all the low-hanging fruits and thus all serious eternal nerdglory is gone forever, why waste a lifetime on academia?

You will not be remembered in 500 years no matter how much you play the academic game perfectly and publish stuff 24/7/365.

Good, keeps the narcissists out. We need to get rid of the slopmaxxers who are only there to make numbers go up. Science is for people with a soul, and perhaps autism, not metagaming industry golems.

>why waste a lifetime on academia
as opposed to waste your time wageslaving for some company?
I'm doing the latter and sometimes I wonder if I should have chosen (or switch to) the former

Unless you are a woman or brown or have good connections your chances for a perm position are very low. Don't do it for a living, I burnt out after 10 years.

I think I'm just not the right kind of person for it, at least the way it was handled at my chair. After finishing my master's I was sure that I probably won't want to do this for the rest of my life.
Then again, I'm also miserable working in the industry right now, so maybe I'm just not made for adult life in general
