Is it really over for mathematicians?

No. Not yet. But for now, top level research will involve a lot of prompting ChatGPT. Also, having access to the best models will be essential.
>>
so with the right prompt I can haz nobels?
>>
>>17029819
No, but the job description for mathematicians is going change, though. Instead of discovering new math, their new job is appreciating and understanding the math AI comes up with.
>>
>>17029819
I don't see how this would be any different for mathematician than when computers arrived. Before computers they didn't even know if the Euler's conjecture was true. Then they just checked with a computer and disproved it. This could be the same thing. Just prompt your AI to read a bunch of papers and ask if they could either help you prove or disprove a conjecture.
>>
>>17029841
hahaha, no, that's also outsourced to AIs.
>>
>>17029819
yeah, and whats solving math equations gonna do? its not like we're getting superconductors or laser beams from just math.

>Before computers they didn't even know if the Euler's conjecture was true.
I'm suprised to see that someone could understand this sentence. Are you telling me that there was only one unanswered question coming from Euler's work? Out of the hundreds of things named after him, 99.9% were concrete results and only a single "further work will be needed to settle this matter" one?

Once math has been mastered, AI moves to solve physics next. Our primitive brains have had to rely on experiments to come up with laws of physics, but AI is going to turn this whole thing upside down. With its superb mastery of mathematics, AI is going to build a mathematical model of our physical universe from first principles without relying on any experimental data. Experiments will only be used to validate the mathematical model and the new predictions it makes.

I'm sorry, but I had to look different conjectures by Euler, and could find 2 that couldn't be resolved without computers. The one I'm refering to was the sum of powers conjecture, which got disproven in 1966. The other one was about Greaco-Latin squares, which got disproven in 1959.

Thanks, i couldn't believe Euler had such power. His reputation precedes him anyway.

>>17029819
The failure of Hilbert's program indicates no, it's not over

Yes. Luddites lost and mathtrans lost too

No. We are now taking the back seat and letting the machines find our shits. As for real job most of us never had one.
>>
>>17029864
I can't wait for AI to disprove dark matter.

>there will be an omnipotent machine god
>only a few mathematicians will be able to speak with it
>they will form a priesthood when they pass on the machine gods will to mankind
We are going to live in the 40k universe?

I meant i could't believe that Euler didn't thought of any question he himself couldn't answer

You didnt answer his question;

He cant answer questions he didnt know to ask.
