>>17030072There's no real reason to believe NASA couldn't do it, they just won't. US space exploration just isn't very sustainable with the way it's funded for any sort of low scientific value high budget missions. The missions NASA is good at are long term low budget missions that they can keep scrounging up money and short missions that can be completed within a single election period max. Artemis will inevitably suffer from a series of delays, budget cuts, both mission creep and mission cuts and changes in contractors and rocket architecture. Just off the latest news with Iran kerfuffle still on going Trump will likely lose the elections in the fall and since Artemis is a Trump program it will be hit by the fallout when Democrats filibuster the senate and congress. Then when Democrats get hit by a pedo scandal or their own boondoggle explodes on their face or what ever and try to stuff the rocket full of trannies the Republicans will win the next election and torpedo those plans etc etc. Stuff like that is just not a concern for Chinese space exploration which has reliable if modest resources and steady long term plans. On a meta level NASA can't handle risk very well, one blown up rocket in Artemis and the whole thing goes to the shitcan, if China blew up their astronauts on the way to the moon the event would whip up the whole state in nationalistic fury and they would launch ten more rockets within the year to take revenge on the moon. If anything being able to blow up rockets and cheer like morons is probably one of the successes of SpaceX to give them a bit of credit. This is one of the reasons why NASA does the kinds of missions NASA does: low profile, extreme reliability requirements and packed with billion grafted on science experiments because they never know if this particular mars rover or space probe is their last one so they have to get the most out of it.

Every time there’s been a change of admin or a midterm shakeup the whole program undergoes a review and shit gets cut or mission changes or manufacturing switches states or whatever.
