Einstein's biggest contribution was mass/energy equivalence which was an eye-catching claim that didn't take much background knowledge to understand. So he became a household name.People saying Einstein "stole" the idea of relativity don't know what they're talkig about. Most of the time they just heard it somewhere and are mindlessly parroting it because they're contrarian retards. The "basis" for the claim is he referenced the work of others and didn't explicitly cite them. The insistence on explicit citations wasn't really a thing in academia at the time. He never tried to pass their work as his own and the people reviewing his papers would have already been aware of the things he was referencing.
