What does it mean when someone is dense? I'm guessing this could be a scientific or medical in origin? What is it that is dense?

dense skull which, scientifically speaking, would mean knowledge is harder to transmit through it into your brain. ie, you don't receive information well and thus slow to learn and are dumb. that's my guess on the etymology at least
