how many here are ACTUALLY grad students or researchers and talk about their actual fields?I need to ask because 90% of the posts seem to be made by nonacademicians due to the overall retardness. not that academia isn't completely filled with retards, but I at least the jargon and technical knowledge indicates most here only heard the word science from watching big bang theory and thinks science is cool, quirky or some dumbshit
I was planning on publishing a paper but then realized its over due to AI, I'm leaving research
>>17037055My dad's an emeritus in his field and I guess after I retire I'll be one in mine. I don't talk about what I do here, other than the occasional question in /mg/ which never gets an answer
>>17037057papers were and still are dogshit with or without AI
>>17037061Why do you hate papers, with or without AI?
>>17037060Do you like number theory or group cohomology?
>>17037068Why wouldn't I?
>>1703706390% of the literature is fabricated garbageI have seem behind the scenes of multiple labs across the world. also haven't you read that most of the experiments can't replicated? people are rewarded for fabricating shit and not punished for it. honest researchers are weeded out and the shittiest, most dishonest ones go to the top, get grants and prestige, and keep doing it to keep their positions
>>17037098What does that have to do with hating papers?
>>17037100what? how do you think papers are made?
>>17037105Someone writes something and it's published? How do you think they're "made"?
>>17037110what is your grad degree?
>>17037113How do you think a "paper" is "made"?
>>17037114that's what I thought...
>>17037124And I.
>>17037124>>17037125That's literally some one schizo talking to himself
>>17037098Your gross misunderstanding of what the replication crisis is exposes your LARP. Better luck next time.
<20% outside of some generals. It is kind of funny to see this board get progressively shittier over the past 5+ years as the genuinely intelligent people leave
>>17037055I dropped out of grad school but I still have my bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering.
>>17037055This whole website is for retards. This board is for retards to talk about science.t. retard
>>17037055PhD. Every time I ask a question I find interesting all I get is schizo retards because my field ties to the Q-word they love so much. Most of the time I do post I correct people on stupid shit, which is why I try to spend as little time as possible here. I've been ragebaited a lot recently tho
>>17037415Have you ever bothered to skim one of those 300+ page, self-published schizo treatises that get spammed here sometimes claiming to have discovered a theory of everything? Just out of morbid curiosity.
>>17037424Yes, but it is mind numbingly boring diatribe. When I look at something seriously I would at the very least re-derive all equations myself but none of it looked promising enough to invest as much time into frankly. I just find the contempt these people have for the "mainstream" they try to "compete" with depressing. When you actually study theory you always spend a significant amount of time trying to figure out how and why the "inferior" theory pops out as a limiting case, you don't spend 50 pages "proving" how stupid and wrong it was.Psychopharmacology is still not good enough to treat these people reliably but I still think a lot of them would lead happier and more fulfilled lives being unironically diagnosed and medicated.
>>17037098Correct.
Thankfully my expertise is in zoology so I can post about it on a much better board, I mostly come here to laugh at autists/schizos
>>17037453I envy you, you get shitbull hater's club, all we get is the high school dropout league.
>>17037055Signalling intelligence or knowledge on a subject by using special code words they teach you in jewish indoctrination college is a sign of being a low IQ cattle slave who parrots what you're told to parrot and claps for fish like some imprisoned Sea Lion at the 3PM Sea World show. For you to even bring it up shows how low IQ you yourself are. Idiots hide behind vocabulary words and true geniuses convey deep ideas in common language anyone from a janitor to a professor could understand. The problem is in the past, say 100-200 years ago science was almost exclusively populated by truly curious and truly smart free thinkers who cared about finding a deeper truth. Today it's an adult daycare for above average midwits who are trained to publish papers no one will read and in no way benefit humanity. All these modern scientists do is sit around, spout special buzzwords to signal their alleged intelligence to normies and each other, and of course huff their own farts.
>>17037512>using special code wordsYou mean jargon? Is knowing what a derivative is already "jewish indoctrination", grug?
>>17037512That's a lot of code words you used just to signal "I'm not."
>>17037520but you see that is the language of "his" in-group (terminally online poltard tourists). He has learned the exact cadence, the right verbs and adjectives to use, and of course spin a narrative of a glorious past he never witnessed but definitely happened.
>>17037055Got a masters a while back, and now a PhD in the works. Between the two i worked a few years in academia and a few years in industry. Now i work for the military.I don't really talk about my research here, partly because i'm not allowed to discuss it publically; but mostly because this place has gone from a fair mix of students, researchers, retards, schizos and egotistical assholes, to being 95% the later two.I used to enjoy coming here and just arguing whatever random scientific topic came up which i was familiar with or could read up on, but lately i find i don't have the patience. Maybe it is because of a decline in the quality of schizos here, or maybe i'm just getting old and tired of fighting windmills, or maybe i just have less free time what with the wife and kids and work and all...
>>17037533Any comments on labrats potentially being bad test animals due to their selectively bred environment?
>>17037555NTA but nothing of value to humanity has ever come from breeding rats (other than indirectly, insofar as it allows people to support a wife and kids).
>>17037555Well any model is only ever as good as the experimental design. There's plenty of things that can be tested on rats. A near infinite ammount of things in fact. But sure, when designing rat experiemnts it is important to keep the limitations of the model in mind.If you expand a bit more on what limitations a selectively bred environment causes, i can maybe give you a better answer.>>17037562>nothing of value to humanity has ever come from breeding ratsWell thats a fucking stupid thing to say.
>>17037055I have a PhD but I mostly lurk. Not much discussion about my field (biostats) anyway
>>17037055PhD in experimental plasma physics. The problem is that /sci/ is really not a good environment for people to talk specifics about their fields or their work (even if the trolls, fags, and fruitcakes weren't around). A lot of anons in research are doing work that's too niche to go into specifics about without doxing themselves.
>>17037055Tenured researcher reporting in, but I mostly lurk around here. Unfortunate enough to be in a field I won't name that is a magnet for retards, especially on /sci/.
>>17037914Experimental or theory?
>>17037914Theory.
im an optometrist
>>17038222same, it's a headache to discuss "it" here because half the people here seem to think linear algebra and calc II are a spook or something.
I work in STEM, we submit and defend SRED applications for our work. Engineering (coding) counts as research if it meets certain criteria of uncertainty, experimentation, discovery, etc.
>>17037055Even though I'm just starting out, I did some credited (and very well-graded, I may add) coursework (plan on doing some more later on) and am affiliated with an org that won't just let any rando retard from the street join it, that's about all I can divulge w/out doxxing myself hereI like to think of myself as an autodidact scholar first and foremost. A noetic curator, if you will
md/phd student. I never talk about my research on here (it would dox me) and only lurk to see what schizos and pseuds have to say about us and our field. It's mainly entertaining. There used to be decent discussion but >>17037533 described it perfectly. It's nice to see in this thread there's at least a few academics left, but looks like we don't feel like actually contributing anymore bc it's shit
