America has the best and worst of everything. Best academics in the world and the dumbest fuckers on the planet. Such a weird place. The left has taken over and has been targeting education for over 50 years and radicalisation of students is as important as studying. People who just get on with their work and don't play the politics stuff are doing great things.
I think you will find that America's intellectual output has very little to do with the amount of PhD students it has. You will now just see talented undergrads go straight into private R&D where they'll get the same opportunities they would have gotten in a PhD program, but now they won't be tax parasites.

I looked up some discussion online about this. Many people on Reddit and such say that it's GOOD that PhD positions are cut. Because the US overproduces the PhDs and there are not enough professor positions for them.I feel uneasy about this. It smells anti-intellectual (even though one of the main discussions is on r/professors). This is saying that we train too many scientists, but instead of trying to let them do more science, the solution is to reduce the number of scientists to train. It seems like a dead-end ladder-pulling strategy.

>>17038085The cuts and such, together with all DEI discussion, are pretty irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Since WWII, the US had a head start economically compared to continental Europe. Looking at postdocs and professors, it is very clear that the US has relied on European excess production in top researchers to move, which they could essentially subsidize thanks to the petrol dollar. The converse is not true; Euro academia does cross pollinate but US researchers are practically nonexistent. However, the US model has always been unsustainable in the long term. They don't produce enough on their own to replenish themselves because most institutions are incredibly subpar. The amount of (domestic) good people not even trying to enter academia and being head hunted by private enterprise is not going to increase. The amount of Europeans willing to choose the US over China or staying in Europe is not going to increase either. They can hope to skim the top from other places, but again, even their koffers aren't bottomless. And what then?
