Long before modern imaging, he correctly identified the heart as a muscular pump with four distinct chambers rather than a passive heat-producing furnace. Because he died in 1519, he predated William Harvey’s 1628 formal discovery of complete blood circulation, although he still held on to some archaic, incomplete assumptions. He built a glass model of the aorta and pumped water with grass seeds to watch fluid swirl past the valves. Quite clever really.
