Why has Heaviside been so forgotten when he was so important? I’m starting to think maybe there is a group of people trying to suppress the ideas of men like him. Perhaps, a (((conspiracy)))?
>>
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Heaviside#Later_years_and_views
>Heaviside was an opponent of Albert Einstein's theory of relativity.
Huh, I guess op was right.
>>
Literally every single undergrad diffy q class talks about heaviside functions
>>
>>17039281
He is either never mentioned or his name is reduced to a forgettable side note.

TPTB don't want you to know that Aether is real

>look guys I took relativity and defined a random reference frame for no reason
>it just sits there while you do relativity, hehe
>yeah it's called the aether, and it's umm, metaphysically superior? it just is, ok?
>>
He gave up on mainstream science being corrupt and retarded, painted his nails pink and slept on a block of granite
>>
>>17039289
Sure, like liouville or taylor or mclaurin or dirac. What point are you trying to make, why do you want me to give a shit about this guy
>>
>>17039571
The point is that his name was suppressed to prevent the propagation of his ideas. You couldn’t figure that out from the original post? Heaviside did a lot more than just popularize the use of the step function.
>>
>>17039876
>his name was suppressed
>except for his association with an incredibly useful tool physicists will continue to employ for centuries
Yes he did more ED stuff, but what ideas were "suppressed", then?
>turned mentally ill in his 60s
>well, more mentally ill, he already was Unitarian
>>
>>17039876
Part of "not being a retard" is dropping one's fixation on the people who discovered things and focusing on the things they discovered.
Heaviside's contributions are preserved. And his name was attached to them if "credit" is what you're fixated on. He also had some views which didn't stand the test of time. Those became a footnote in the history of science.
If you do any study on the history of General Relativity, early opposition to the theory will get all the mention it's due. Arguments against relativity, and an explanation of where they failed, are easy to come by.
>>
>>17039895
anyone talking about relativity won't stop wanking about einstein, most over credited hack in history, majority of "his" contribution is plagiarized work.
>>
>>17039898
>anyone talking about relativity
You mean youtubers, television, and social media?
nta but Einstein is credited for bringing together key ideas that largely existed previously, but physicists spend exactly 0 minutes in their day to day thinking about the dead jewish office worker turned physicist. I am so tired of you people and your poopsci brains
>>
>>17039898
And most people who fixate on Einstein, as a person, are retarded as well.
He wasn't actually a plagiarist, btw. He didn't take credit for other people's work. Citation standards were different in the 20th century and you never bothered to actually look into it.

bro it is very clear you don't talk to people in academia, let alone have a tertiary level of education, who are you kidding?

The first definition of plagiarism in that image (passing someone else's work as one's own) is the important one here.
The second definition (use without citation) did not even exist back then.

But, again, the fact that you're lashing out and accusing me of using AI instead of making a relevant point can best be interpreted as a concession that you don't actually have a point.
>>
>>17039907
>argues over credentials on anonymous imageboard
as i said, fuck off larper.

Brave of you to assume that physics conspiracy schizos actually have studied physics and mathematics
>>

>pulls the larper card
>doesn't even manage to lie about her credentials
Nice concession, homofürst
>>
>>17039923
Where are you even getting the impression that I'm parroting an LLM from? What brought you to that conclusion?
>>
>>17039931
i just showed you specifically that definition of plagiarism in Germany where Einstein worked at the time included failure to acknowledge/name the originator of the idea. long time before he published his first work.
>Where are you even getting the impression
you sound like an averaged out redditor.
>>
>>17039262
>This function is valued 0 for negative numbers and 1 for positive numbers
>OMG THIS IS THE BIGGEST ADVANCE IN MATHEMATICS EVER!!!! HOW COME NOBODY THOUGHT OFF THAT BEFORE????
I just don't see what the big deal about him was
>>
Heaviside
>Has a normal weight
Einstein
>Weights at least 18 stones

What did science mean by this?
>>
>>17039938
>definition of plagiarism in Germany where Einstein worked at the time included failure to acknowledge/name the originator of the idea.
The definition goes on:
>then gives them up for his own. (Translated ofc)
If you did not do that part, you did not plagiarize under that definition. That's not what Einstein did.
>>
>>17039962
>That's not what Einstein did.
that's what he did (by putting only his name on it without mentioning others)
>>
Tell me about Heaviside, who he was as a person and what he did
>>
>>17039972
Yeah, I'm sure everyone was convinced Einstein was responsible for deriving Maxwell's equations.
>>
>>17039993
>argument by stupidity
he didn't cite/acknowledge recent not commonly known work of people he worked with, you meritless brainlet
>>
>>17040007
What did he neglect to cite which wasn't commonly known among the people reviewing his work?
I would like a specific example.
>>
>>17039939
Besides a bunch of notable inventions and influential foundational texts on electromagnetism, maxwell’s equations are really heaviside’s. Somehow this random self taught guy took maxwell’s tangled mass of equations with like 20 unknowns and distilled them down into the 4 equations we see today. Maxwell didn’t come up with those. Heaviside did after half a decade of determined self study. Very remarkable. Not many such cases
>>
>>17039281
Heaviside functions are legit the least notable thing this man did. You only prove OP’s point
>>
What a about Steinmetz?
>>
>>17039884
His name is rarely mentioned even in association with the step function. Ask me how I know.
>more ED stuff
He was a foundational pioneer in ED and modern electrical engineering wouldn’t exist without him. Reducing his work to “more ED stuff” shows how little you know about him.
>unitarian
Do you think he was a Unitarian Universalist? That’s not what Unitarian means here. He was Unitarian in theology, not a Unitarian Universalist.

>>17039939
Dumbass.

>>17040271
Yeah I should have mentioned him as well. His name has been purposely suppressed as much as Heaviside’s.
>>
>>17040934
>Unitarian in theology,
yes, in contrast to trinitarian. Thing is, fringe flavors of Christianity are, in general, mentally ill, even more than the baseline. They persecuted the unrelated but even more mentally ill calvinists for a reason. But all of this is off topic, it was a cheap shot.
>He was a foundational pioneer in ED
yeah yeah coax, writing the non-shit version of maxwell's equations, etc
>Ask me how I know.
Ask me how I know you never attended a serious theoretical physics lecture if you think people waste their time on history bullshit. This isn't humanities, people are expected to do that research on their own or attend a dedicated lecture.
>>
>>17040934
General Electric would have been nothing without him.
>>
>>17039262
His story is actually pretty incredible. He's one of those 19th century autodidacts from England like George Boole and George Green.

I think that's the sign of a true genius. Not necessarily the typical shit you hear in the news, like graduating at 15 or being a prodigy at school, but being so intellectually gifted that even without formal education in the field you start to mog veterans of said field with your self-taught ingenious.
>>
>>17041072
low hanging fruit n sheeit
that's why geniuses don't exist anymore
>>
>>17041089
There are many reasons for the general decline of human intelligence. I would say humanity is speciating. Don't fuck dumb people.
>>
>>17041096
most people are retarded regardless of historical period
>>
>>17041103
Honestly seems like intellectuals were more favorably viewed before. Now you get retards proud of their ignorance. Homo vulgaris.
>>
>>17039262
I don't think this is accurate?
Pretty sure everyone knows that Heaviside is the one who actually first wrote down the four Maxwell's equations.
