stumbled across https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijFm6DxNVyI and am now having anxiety. is it likely that a bubble is heading towards us right now or is it that not enough time has passed for the "random" chance to perform enough combinations and we are fine in human time frames.

In physics, systems tend to move toward more stable, lower-energy states. The video uses an analogy of a ball sitting in a valley: it may look stable, but there could be a deeper valley somewhere else.

Our universe could theoretically be in such a “false vacuum”—a state that is stable for now, but not the absolute lowest-energy state.

Quantum mechanics allows, at least in theory, a tiny region of space to spontaneously transition into the lower-energy vacuum state.

That would create a bubble of “true vacuum.”

The crucial part is that this bubble would expand outward at approximately the speed of light. As it passed through space, the fundamental properties of the universe could change—including the behaviour of particles and forces.

So this wouldn't be like an explosion destroying things one by one. Instead, the rules that allow matter, chemistry, stars, planets and life to exist could cease to work in their current form.

And because the bubble travels at light speed, if one were headed toward Earth, we wouldn't see it coming. The transition would arrive before any information about it could reach us.

The Higgs field has a particular energy configuration throughout the universe. Physicists don't know with absolute certainty whether the configuration we're in is the lowest possible one.

The video is not saying that the universe is about to end.

Vacuum decay is a theoretical possibility arising from our current understanding of quantum field theory. We don't know whether our vacuum is actually metastable, and even if it is, the probability of a transition occurring within any meaningful timescale could be extraordinarily small.

So the takeaway isn't “the universe will suddenly disappear.”

It's more:

“Our universe may have a deeper state of reality that we haven't discovered, and quantum mechanics theoretically provides a way for it to transition there.”
