>>17041889I like awesomecv but I don't think the ATS systems do. At this point just make it in word or some shit. For me I don't want to work for a place that screens shit out that way anyway.
Going to be doing a somewhat niche bachelors in Engineering after the Foundation year. Just a bit worried because the employment section is really vague compared to other more "traditional" fields like Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.Just a bit worried but I do live in the section of the country that has a lot of renewables around.I hope I can manage to get a job afterwards, going to do everything I can try. Summer Internships, joining the official membership organisation as a student and joining the Society that is focused on it.
>>17041950Huge mistake. Studying a field that is called Renewable energy for undergraduate will scare off the hoes (employers) because there are many cringe non-rigorous degrees like that and you will have a very bad time pivoting to another field out of necessity. You are better of studying a traditional engineering degree and then going into the area. Just check out the job listings Bro.
>Look at job listings for my field in the US>100-150k for PhD + 0-2 years of experience>Job requirements are generic and I check all the boxes>Look at job listings for my field in the EU/UK (where I am allowed to work)>40k for entry level, 60k for 5+ YoE>Every job requires extremely specific experience I don't haveI can't even get a McDonalds level salary in my field here and in the US I'd be comfortably middle class.
>>17042118>get a STEM job in the USAmerican here. Every job requires experience outside of uni, so if you think your work experience in academia will net you a job, think again.

>>17042195I have 2 years postdoc + 2 years in industry post-PhD.Neither is in an area that employers here want.
>>17042229What is your field? In my field, the only people hiring PhDs are research universities with hospital branches, like Emory. Most companies only hire PhDs temporarily until they can replace them with MSc so they don't have to pay as much. Typical US job cycle.
>>17042197I can't even get a lab assistant job out of a BSc with tons of wet labs, research, and bioinformatics. I hate this shit.
>>17042233I'm about to graduate with a doctorate, 5 first person publications at BIG NAME AI CONFERENCES a FAANG FRONTIER AI LAB internship and still I am eating shit. I deserve this for trying to get some positive motion in my career though. I understand that.
>>17042269I just said fuck it and enrolled for some post-bacc whilst I study for the MCAT. If I can't even get a fucking job with a BSc and tons of lab work, might as well try to become a physician.
>>17042231Something like optical spectroscopy, instrumentation and semiconductorsThe only people doing optical spectroscopy pay 40k, the instrumentation people want someone making high throughput standardized fab equipment instead of harebrained diy setups, and the semiconductor people want someone who has done epitaxy instead of stirring gunk into a cuvette or pointing lasers at wafers.I really thought it would be employable and in the US it might be but here the jobs just do not seem to exist.
>>17042303Oh yeah the optics people want someone who has used professional optics simulation software, the photonics people want someone who makes PIC chips, the quantum people have their whole own thing.

I’ve only seen roasties on social media getting jobs in their respective academic fields. Am I crazy or is it virtually impossible for a straight white man to get one? And at a larger scale is there a systematic denial of my group from education?

Guys, I wonder about how research or jobs in applied mathematics. I want to study a masters in my country, it's a good institution. But I wonder about getting too niche or too broad. It doesn't seem as easy as choosing an actual topic like mathematical finance and then work at a bank. I'd wish there was a guide to what to expect, maybe I could make an academic career work with these topics? By applied mathematics I mean things like machine learning and optimization theory. While I'm there I guess I would be able to choose to be more computational or more theoretical, both are interesting... I am unsure of how much time I will have to think of shit like these decisions with the how hard the courses can be.

>>17043911You also probably have pension, state healthcare, and cheap ass housing. My wife and I pull a bit more than $400K together. Of that, we put about $50k into 401Ks, $10K into HSAs, pay about $30K for private health insurance, pay $2K per month for infant daycare, $5K a month for housing, $1K per month for 2 cars, $2K per year for car insurance, etc. etc. and we only get 20 days vacation and 10 holidays a year. Your 60k€ gets you an entire month in Lindau at bargain basement vacation rates.
>>17044101The state pension/healthcare are the bare minimum and are unlikely to exist by the time I would need to access them. Currently, the only healthcare access I have for everything short of cancer is through my employer's health insurance, simply because the state healthcare system is overloaded. For state pension the retirement age for my generation is 70 and again that will be poverty level.Housing is cheaper but not as much as you would think and certainly not by as much as my income is lower. Most goods are similar or more expensive than when I lived in the US. Basically, of course I would happily quadruple my income and costs, because that would quadruple the amount saved.I live in a one-bed flat, I do not own a car, do not have pets, do not have kids, do not have expensive hobbies and never travel. I've worked quite hard for all my life, have a good CV, and am entering mid-career in a technical field. With all that, I save about 1k a month and most of that goes into trying to accumulate savings for retirement, which is not really working. I simply could not afford to have a family, even a car and a dog is pushing it.Absolutely not in the mood to listen to some damn yank whine about how hard it is to make half a million a year.
>>17044101Oh yeah, also>we only get 20 days vacation and 10 holidays a yearI get four weeks of vacation, which I assume will be the same as your 20 days, and 7 holidays.

>talk to hiring manager>totally puzzled why I am not a professor if I have a PhD and like to teach>Why did you work for 4 universities and not just stay with one? Anyone else get this bullshit?
>>17041990It sucks. My sister had the misfortune of doing HR work to cover a employee on leave since she needed the money and all they do is just skim the degree name for buzzwords. The extra effort of effort just read a teensy bit more even after all the preliminary filtering and instant "NOs" is too much of a laboured task for them.
>>17043804The US puts infinite money into the military with little budget discretion or evaluation (hence being called a swamp).
>>17043520I know exactly what you mean and yes you have to settle for less interesting stuff at the beginning5 years ago we were gods. physicists with coding skills could get into any highly respectable and interesting entry role we desired. now you're just another unemployed grad with nothing special to offer
>>17044689>at the beginningYou settle for less interesting stuff out of necessity at the beginning. Then you get pigeonholed into that, because you are too old for entry level roles elsewhere, and the senior roles require exact matches with prior experience. If the stars align you may be able to pivot into middle management eventually, but short of being a human CC intermediary, once you get into a shitty career pipeline that pretty much sets the tone of the rest of your life.

>>17044998Solid state physicsEE specializing in DSP/RFGeology specializing in oil/gas field surveysIn any case, when you have a PhD, you should have wide ranging skills to have sufficient versatility for branching into other fields.
>>17045115I'm assuming you have no work experience since you only mentioned student shit. Just spam apply to everything and be willing to move to wherever you get an offer. It doesn't have to be forever. After 2-3 years in power you can go anywhere and do whatever you want. As far as interviewing goes just relax, no one expects you to know anything about how power actually works because trust me you don't. You can mention the projects if you're in desperate need of something to talk about but be very humble about it and keep it brief. Biggest mistake you can make at your level is thinking you can impress the interviewers with your projects and larping like you know what the fuck you're talking about, they already know you don't. Look up all the utilities and co-ops in your state or wherever you think you might like to live. There are also contractor firms like WSP and then there are also the RTOs but those would be more of a reach.Last thing I'll say is if you get a job in transmission or generation be very careful about burning bridges, once you get to the transmission level of power it is a surprisingly small professional world, even in a country as big as the US. You will see the same names over and over again throughout your career.

You have two internship offers. One is from a high-end semiconductor company and the other one is from a textile manufacturer. However the semiconductor role is just a project-management documentation pusher role, while the internship at the textile company a true data analytics role.Is choosing industry, no matter the role, more important than the function of the role? How the fuck do you decide what to do your thesis on?I passed my exams and when I talked to my advisor about the things I was most interested in and asking about what grants he needed worked on and he basically said do whatever.I know the direction I want to go in general, but nothing specific. I also might want some things that require either adding to the lab which I'll have to talk to my advisor about of course, but it seems so daunting to even decide on something.Physics (and obviously US) if it matters.
>>17046593if you want a job outside academia do something AI or experimental optics related. If you want to work on thin films maybe some PVD or MBE thing. >>17045881with a top university masters degree and faang experience you should not have major problems.the real question is what companies are you aiming for. if you want faang again or hft or ai labs like anthropic and openai it will probably be harder. if it is just a fortune 500 or some other noname midsize company it will be easier.regarding interviews almost nothing has changed. leetcode is still just as important. system design is still just as important and maybe even more important than before. ai assisted coding is already present at some companies while others do not have it. it is totally random. sometimes they also ask for lld coding like building tic tac toe without ai or give you a piece of code to review. in ai assisted sections if you get one you will likely need to build a complete application and you must show that you understand all the code.you can spin your 1.5 years of experience in mechanical engineering as taking any job just to have work after a layoff. but it is better to frame it as doing software automation almost full time. or you can aim defense companies. > so many people leaving the industrymostly people aged 35 plus and 40 plus old folks who managed to save up for fire are leaving. those who are 20 to 35 years old stay in the industry and do not go anywhere. my us citizen acquaintances are now moving to companies like anduril palantir and other similar defense and near defense places. there are a lot of startups in this sector.by the way defense is probably the best fit for you since mechanical engineering or electrical engineering experience is likely welcomed there in some places.

>>17045950>Most people in this general are in their 30sNo.
>>17047384Ask them yourself you slimy faggot.
>>17047850Unfortunately, yep.
Why is this?
>>17047925Lack of effort—employees are too expensive to waste the time and money on anyone who is not putting in 110% and already 200+% above their peers. However, employment is a choice—take a risk, start a business: with AI this is easier than ever before and once you are making your own rules employment becomes visible as the trap it is. At the end of the day if you are not willing to work hard then the market will replace you with someone who is—whether that be as an employee or a business owner.
>>17047925I can relate 50% of the time in experimental physics was spent on cleaning stuff. Either cleaning containers or chambers or probes or wafer or deposition tip.Its a good chunk of jannie work even at phd level. Also for some reason people thing if you studied physics you sat on your ass all day playing with theoretical stuff which is wrong you do nearly everything yourself but no one appreciates it.

>>17047933Sounds like you're a prime candidate for continuing on to medical school. Just do that and leave the pipette bitch jobs to the MSc and PhDs who will never do anything of note or value.
>>17047935Take a risk—start a business: no one owes you a job. With AI success is easier than ever before. Medical technology is a great market to break in to right now: AI is capable of handling much of the compliance work that has historically made the field expensive and difficult to succeed in.
>>17047925>masters degree in medical physicsWell first off a master's degree in non-medical physics is a consolation prize for failing out of your PhD program, not a good thing. This isn't always the case for medical physics in particular, but if you don't go for a PhD you'll probably struggle to get a residency, and if you don't get a residency you are practically illegal to hire. It's not that masters can't get residencies, but the numbers are against them and it's competitive.Basically they chose a path that's known to have the bottom ~third fail out and landed in that bottom third.

STEM degrees are useless now. I talked to my friends from high school who went on to study physics. Of the five, only one managed to get a software engineer job at some stagnant company for a small salary. He worked there for 8 months and then was replaced by an AI and then laid off. The other 4 have never worked at all and are simply living as NEETs with their parents. Meanwhile just a few years ago my older friends easily found jobs as software engineers after graduation, and some went into science as postdocs after PhD. There were no unemployed people. STEM is waste of time. It's grim here.

>>17048904>would you guys drive 100km back and forth every day for a job? Only if you can eventually go remote or something. Travelling 200km every day will eat away at you in the long run. Is a BE in Mechatronics worth it or is the degree another meme where I'll end up applying to ME and EE jobs while being worse at them than other applicants? Is robotics a safe field?
Hello guys, I would like to ask for advice about going into math academia grad school. I really enjoyed my analysis and PDE classes so far, which universities focus on this kind of research? How hard is it to get in? My dream would be to one day (even if just a tiny little contribution) get to work on the Navier-Stokes problem, and maybe also get tenure. I hope the question is fine here since it is basically a career question. Any advice is welcome
>>17049326
>>17049326I hope you are wealthy enough not to worry about getting a job ever.
>>17049307>bachelors>fieldnigger it doesn't matter.>mechatronicscan mean anything from a short vocational training cert for field technicians to a full engineering degree.I did one called "mechatronics" but it was just a mechanical engineering course with a bunch of EE and programming classes swapped in for some of the more advanced pure mechanical classes. legally it still counts as a mechanical engineering degree in my shitty little eurocunt and the job market treats them as largely equivalent. but it is easier to switch to industrial controls or software because you get more exposure to such things.but that's undergrad and it matters fuck all. I ended up doing a master's in CS and my PhD in robotics (technically also CS), and the only thing that matters now is specifically what problems I have worked on in the past and what I know how to do
Any tips for a interview revolving around optics, mechanics and electronics? Its some kind of semi conductor gig I know that part very well but the optic part is rather poorly understood by me. I don't get how I got this invite its a long shot but a chance at least...
>>17050323From this vaguest of descriptions I'm guessing the day-to-day would be to figure out how to make a gizmo to perform a task. So get the big picture specs, identify key parts that satisfy the specs without being complete overkill, slap parts together with Solidworks, check mounting with stock components or custom hardware where necessary, 3D print/machine/order custom bits, slap the optics into Zemax to figure out if it might do approximately what you want it to do before buying the $40k laser, wire shit together maybe making custom PCBs with KiCAD to prevent worst ghetto snake nests, program some microcontrollers with whatever to do little shit tasks you can't get off-the-shelf parts for, shove it all into LabVIEW to control the full system, sacrifice goats until it finally works.
>>17050323Hello stupid, stinky brown person.I would begin by reading the job description. In particular look for the "summary" or "job responsibilities" section (usually introduced by a header in bold letters.)Then I would go to the company website and see if I could find more information about their "gigs."If you are feeling really adventurous you might even venture onto other sites like wikipedia or youtube and see if you can find even more information there.Hope this helps.
>>17050623there is no detail about any of that thats why I am asking. The job description itself is very vague its via a third party which doesn't disclose the client nor the content of the job. I have been getting increasingly possessed by the idea of quitting my engineering job to get a degree in physics. I am being fucking stupid right?
>>17053108A degree as in a BS? Why?As in a PhD? Why?Your earnings will be considerably less either way. The line between physics and engineering research often disappears depending on what you're doing. Why?
>>17053127BS first and PhD ultimately I guess? Two reasons. Increasingly feeling unsatisfied with my job as far as it being (at the risk of being up my own ass) "intellectually stimulating", and the project managers and finance guys are getting increasingly grating, though I guess that is a curse in any job.I've also found out about Lorentz Ether Theory and Bohmian Mechanics recently and its gotten me digging into that and wishing I knew far more about modern physics experiments and theories than I currently do.I am an electrical engineer so I could maybe looking into a PhD in that direction. Though my grads where not great when getting my engineering bachelors.>Your earnings will be considerably less either way.Ya.. that is definitely something to keep in mind lol
>>17053131There is literally no reason to do a BS if you're an EE. You are probably half-retarded.In the slight chance you're not, you can try to get a PhD in whatever, eventually transition from being a glorified lab technician to theory, and be intellectually stimulated at the cost of seven figures of lifetime earnings and genuine misery during grad school.Or you could just realize work is work and do something that fulfills you in your free time.
>>17053131which topic do you find interesting that you can't just pick up via a review paper? Studying physics is a bad idea it doesn't teach much its just a structured self learn program with access to a lab.
>>17053151>There is literally no reason to do a BS if you're an EE.No way my background knowledge on physics would be sufficient. >You are probably half-retarded.Odds are decent on that ya.>>17053165Fair point, and even for structured learning I can probably just grab textbooks and course outlines online. And if profs are still like when I went to uni the clankers wont do a worse job explaining questions I have
>>17053171depends on the prof my uni had a lot of good profs but also a few bad ones. Most of the bad ones where theoretical physicists. Also you don't have to be a student to ask questions you can just meet at a conference and ask them they love talking about their research but be warned that 10min talk feels like reading a chapter in a textbook.
>>17053171>No way my background knowledge on physics would be sufficient. For what though? For just a PhD? You've got the E&M, quantum is piss easy. You might struggle in classical and stat mech, but that's fine. If you wanted to do semiconductor thin films or something an EE is absolutely a fine background. If you wanted to actually do Lorentz ether or Bohmian mechanics then lol, lmao
>>17052935Yes. I put my PhD, post-docs and VAP stint under experience because it is even if industry does not value it highly.
>>17052935Earlier, when there was less experience, yes.Now that it's been 5 years and 3 job titles post-PhD, no. It is a short snipped in the "Education" section and my resumes are always one-page.If it was particularly relevant to the job, I might add it under Experience. It never is.
What should I do in this situation?>almost 2 yr as grad in massive engineering consulting firm that has been going through multiple restructuring>self-driven learning because no budget or time to bring fresh blood like us up to speed>somehow always end up in projects that were mismanaged with little to no downtime>department starts shoving AI down our throat and tells us to do more with lessI doubt my situation will improve if I stick around longer. Even if I leave, the skills I've developed are not well sought after for grad level roles. What a dilemma.

Or just becoming a farmer/fisherman? Either way I think I’ve slowly accepted my fate and that I was born into the wrong era to be a thinker but wondering if anyone else here feels this discouraged
>>17053613To be honest if AI can replace you you probably weren't doing real science, just being a human calculator.
>>17050150>but that's undergrad and it matters fuck all. I ended up doing a master's in CS and my PhDBachelor's degree is the only one that truly matters. You only do a Master's if you fail to find a job and want to dick around some more. Nobody really gives a fuck and I regret doing it.PhD is hit or miss but from a financial standpoint it's overall retarded.
>>17053613>Or just becoming a farmer/fishermanBeing a baker sounds a lot more enjoyable.
>>17053641>real scienceYou mean writing grants, ordering around your student slaves and participating in conferences? That's manager shit. The research is the hypothesis -> experiment -> conclusion loop. For now AI struggles only in the "experiment" part except for simulations (if you could even take simulations seriously KEK). The next logical step for research institutions is to replace all expensive PhDs with cheap technicians that act as an API for the real world and perform commands given by AI. Research is over.

Ah another day of rejections for hospital lab tech positions that I got a degree for!
Hey y’all. I wrote >>17054903 while very drunk, depressed, and tired. Anyways, I think I did well on the interview. They asked a lot about maritime expertise, which was my specialty. One thing that worries me though is that the guy running the hiring process seemed over worked to be honest. I had to reach out to confirm a time and date. He seemed genuinely as tired as I was during the interview. Is this normal for research positions or am I just an after thought in the hiring process?
