I remember in the 2010s the newspapers were full of these news that an experiment to prove whether gravity is actually quantum or just classical was imminent and that it would lead to a nobel prize immediately10 years later and still nothing though? what's the hold up?

Gravity as a force is many orders of magnitude weaker than any of the forces that are studied by particle physicists and there is a good reason why we haven’t tried to do much more at gravity measurements than folks who did the Cavendish torsion-balance experiments . In fact physicists have continued to do experiments like the Cavendish torsion balance for a century. And we test gravity in astrophysical scenarios all the time. The problem in the media is intertwined with the government/industry obsession with all things “quantum”. It’s a huge grift in government funding to arbitrarily attack the word “quantum” to things, even though quantum physics and its descendants within chemistry have been completely conventional for decades. “Quantum Computing!” “Quantum Information!” “Quantum Cryptography!” all meme expressions that excite the limbos systems of the neanderthals who dole out billions of private equity funding . in the end it is all a really shitty false advertising gambit by fake bullshitters
