Does anyone actually purchase scientific papers?

Like when you try accessing them without an institutional logic it says you can buy the article for like 49.99$

Do they actually earn money on this or is it just a way of gatekeeping science from poor people?

Who in their right mind pays for this bullshit on an individual basis except for some journo idiots? Even most scientists I know that aren't boomers just use sci-hub
>>

Most who buy it individually get reimbursed. It's largely tax payer money going to these corporations.

Ah, just people working at institutions that refuse to pay the trash journal tax (I know elsevier and the like bundle the relevant jorunals with 500 dogshit ones nobody reads and charges institutions out the ass for all of them).
>It's largely tax payer money going to these corporations.
Honestly the institutions should charge them back for the time THEIR people spend on peer reviewing

lol, no. even when i have institutional access i don't pay. if it's something i'm casually interested in i'll see if it's on sci-hub or one of the other usual repositories.

if it's something relevant for actual research i'll just reach out to the author and ask for access and they'll usually send me a copy along with info or data that didn't make the final cut of the paper.
