What’s your favorite mega project? Space elevator? Bering strait railroad? A Qattara depression oasis?

For me it’s a hydroelectric dam across the Gibraltar strait

Does Moscow Metro count?

Nuclearization of the world shipping fleet would be big and very powerful

I'm not sure if it counts as a mega project but I'm fascinated by the Medog hydro power plant. It's so huge and on a river that most people probably haven't even heard off, diverting a river trough a mountain and making more electricity than the UK

A much more realistic option is to make them all run on hydrogen and then just have hydrogen pit stops powered with solar and electrolysis in the deserts in particular. Spain, bunch of areas in north and west Africa , Arabian peninsula, south western USA would already sit on shipping routes and be ideal from the weather perspective. Most of the downsides of hydrogen sort of go away when you scale up the systems, it's just never going to be good for cars but for ships it could be the thing because running them on batteries would be bad idea and nuclear more so.

It could autonomously power a ridiculous array of cartoonish or deals, with climbing walls, moving buzzsaw traps and trapdoor pitfalls all along the bridge, and use as bait a legislation which grants automatic citizenship and extra prizes to whoever makes it through unaided.

Dyson sphere around everything. Ironically, it requires all the matter in known existence to construct. Leaving the center empty. It exists afterwards only for itself. Ironically, it just sits there amassing more and more influence over everything...waiting for someone to give it a task but noone ever does because nothing is left but the machine.

I'm a big fan of massive canalization and swamp drain projects: Bradfield Scheme, North American Water and Power Alliance, the draining of the Great Black Swamp. I just think they're neat.
Granted, I realize they're typically awful for the environment and kill billions of birds, fish, frogs, etc.
