How does air get inside e.g. a bell pepper? Why aren't they a vacuum?
>>
There's seeds inside. If there's seeds - they were pollinated at flower stage. Pollen somehow got there, so there were air. Then the bell has closed.

Plant cells produce gasses as a byproduct of their metabolism.
I'm confused on why you're confused about this.

well I'm not litterally in profound disbelief but I'm interested nonetheless
I would have guessed air just very slowly seeps in from outside so this:
>Plant cells produce gasses as a byproduct of their metabolism.
is interesting. So the composition could be quite different from ambient air? More CO2 and less oxygen?

Popsci slop has you covered on this one:

intredasting thanks, wouldn't have thunk it desu

Then all plants should be foamy, but they are not. That means that gases aren't trapped in a tissue. Then why they would be trapped in a paper or pumpkin?

Obviously it depends on other things too.
>>
I just submerged a pepper and squeezed it a bit, air bubbles came out of the cut stem so its not fully airtight. I know that CO2 and O2 can diffuse across plant cell walls too.

Makes sense. Plants aren’t impermeable. They have pores. They need air for respiration
>>
Air even escapes through the rubber of a balloon. It doesn't sound loke a surprise that it would pass through bell pepper walls as well

>open cola bottle
>gas comes out of the liquid
wtf, what is this magic?
