This humane because it's irrational. Bear spends his time for smth that wouldn't bring him any direct benefit. This pushes me to think that he's aware of some higher more complex concepts that bring benefit long-term: friendship, kindness (smb helped me, I'd help others), sustaining his ecosystem. This why it looks so humane and sentient. However, maybe it's just a parent instinct make this bear treat small animals like cubs.
