The money never mattered. Not saying this in some "they did it for passion" shit but because they didn't grasp how the research would pan out or the decline of academics ability to retain/not burn out talent.

Numerical approximations or "it cant solve it BUT it can solve an easier
/reduced version of it" are more relevant and the people working on those tend to get paid a lot more due to their more immediate utility.

Your question does not take the shape of the type of question P vs NP is asking about. Its more specific than simple any question that is hard to solve vs easy to verify. It stuff like seppuku puzzles or the travelling salesman
