In Germany? People usually acknowledge it if you don't make a big deal out of it. It is particularly useful when dealing with certain clienteles, take medical doctors. They have a habit of treating the average person as a complete retard but they do have a very strong adherence to pecking order and acknowledge you as someone they can talk to beyond "unga bunga". Absolutely indispensable when you are medically well informed and want to not be dismissed.
