All CVS locations in Ann Arbor, including the one on campus a few blocks from the Mathematics Department, have a dozen different types of blankets for sale, so no need to staple squares of random fabric together. If not for the fact that I've worked with enough mathematicians to know how limited their ability to cope with the physical world is, I'd think he was making the whole story up. But how he tells it, sounds pretty realistic for a math droid.
