my professor just told me he wants me to do my thesis with AI
I was replaced even before I started guys, and regardless of if the bubble bursts or if it doesn't, I'll get branded as a guy who takes shortcuts and can't do things on his own

He thinks you're a retard. You're not worth his time and guidance.
>>
>>17059146
I am a retard. I want to stop being one though
>>
>>17059141
You professor wants you to work alone with an AI mentor for 30-40 years.
We do too.

Just do it with AI but tell him you didn't.
He can't tell.

Your Prof secretly wants your anus

That's a good idea. Nobody was going to read your thesis anyway. If they will accept a shitty AI thesis then just give it to them.

impossibru
retardation is a slowdown in cognitive development during childhood, and since you learn slower with every day you are alive it is impossible to unretard yourself after middle school

Your Prof is really excited for AI. Nothing about you lackie

My boss (a professor) is tutoring some undergrads in physics research (like summer research but at least one of them is still doing shit for him) and he is actively encouraging to vibe code their entire project. They have the whole claude agent setup to interface with the University’s Kimi-K2 and the student is like “make a plot of the sensor data and put it into the GUI” and then Claude is like “OK, reboot the app and take a look at the plot” and then she’s like “Awesome! Oh wait it just crashed” and then she types into Claude “it just crashed, here is the error message” and the Claude is like “OK, I refactored the code to handle this exception, please run this code to recompile the libraries and then see if it works now.” She just sits there doing that for hours. No checking the code or even reading it, just running commands and then seeing if the GUI looks convincing enough. It’s as if human undergrad research is just like the human test subject for whether some vibe code black box generates some GUI that looks plausible to a 20 year old. I wouldn’t be surprised if somewhere along the lines Claude decided to replace the data with a RNG

They’re just lazy fucks who don’t want to do their job (pedagogy that is) and think they’re too high and mighty for those pesky students. My advisor had the exact same attitude towards me and my work. He didn’t understand anything I was doing. The whole thing completely demoralized me regarding academia as a whole. I’m glad I left and I’m glad grad school gave me enough knowledge and experience to do my math autism alone as a hobby.

Absolutely. Tenured professors in Physics (and I would assume math too) were already lazy as fuck in terms of training students even before the LLM revolution. Now they are completely checked out, at least for the vast majority. They demand an ersatz product to imitate research, which the students are required to make because it is too much work to mentor the students if they attempt real research, and they demand a pantomime sophistry because engaging with a real intellectual innovation would be too much for their slumbery boomer brains. And the years of DEI we went through for the last 15 years mean that nobody under 55 has any actual merit any more; the professors under 55 are still all thinking to themselves “When is this ‘fake it till you make it’ thing going to end?”

it’s disgraceful and this AI stuff, which to the real world will be a nothingburger, will really be the first nails in the coffin on academic STEM

I would argue that if you look at the educational system in the USA, then yes, a lot of profs could be replaced by LLMs. Most professors at research universities are required to do a dual job: 1) teach undergrads and mentor grad students and 2) conduct original research in the pursuit of knowledge production.

The problem is that most tenured professors give very little shits about either duty, but when you have 18-26 year olds knocking on your door to try to advance on the academic Trick-or-Treat competition, they basically need to fulfill their role as a teacher; otherwise the dean gets mad at them telling them the students felt like your courses were a joke. On the other hand, doing the other side of the job—research—is something that 1) they can just tell their grad students to do and be a “hands-off advisor” and 2) they can push out garbage research and nobody really cares because peer review is a joke sham.

So the question is: can LLMs teach students? Can LLMs do research?

I think LLMs can certainly teach students. Maybe right now they would be shitty at grading students since all the frontier models are initial-prompted to tell everyone “That point you made is where it really gets interesting” but I think you could easily use existing AI technology to be a good “tough” teacher by simply initial-prompt tweaks.

On the other hand, I don’t trust AI to be able to do actual research yet, at least not in the sciences.

So overall, LLMs could certainly replace the set of tenured professors who are glorified teachers whose research is done purely by their grad students/postdocs, or whose research is crap anyhow. And that, in my experience, is a big fraction, certainly a majority, of the tenured professors who exist in academia today
