Is time travel theoritically possible wihout causing paradoxes? And I'm not talking about time travelling to different timelines, I'm talking about going back in time in the same timeline you started in, and actualling being able to change the past(so no superdeterminism).
Time is a relative measurement derived from comparing the state of components in a system as they evolve in space, if you want to "time travel" you would have to manipulate the state of all existence and either accelerate the evolution of the system or reverse it, both of which are impossible in any scenario which you might come up with. Now please stop making time travel threads, it's become reddit-tier shit.
>>17061940So how could a wormhole send you backwards(or forewards) in time? If time is simply a measurement of the state of components in a system, why does gravity slow down time?
>>17061942Wormholes don't exist.>why does gravity slow down timeBecause gravity is not a force in itself but the sum of all forces acting on a body. If you are in a field of higher gravitic potential you encounter a larger resistance to movement through space, so the time it takes for you to move a certain distance increases, which means your time components slows down _relative_ to someone moving through unobstructed space. Keyword being relative, time doesn't actually slow down from your local point of view, you will only appear to move slower to someone who is moving faster relative to you and the vice versa applies.
>>17061947And why does moving at a significant percentage of the speed of light, even in the absence of any gravity, slow down time?
>>17061950Does it? I've yet to see anyone travel at those speeds and record their experience.
>>17061918>so no superdeterminismthat seems impossible. for a time traveler to come from our past it's mandatory they predict any event, including when an atom will decay. else it's just not our future, it's a different one. so mf is lost.
>>17061981 me>for a time traveler to come from our pastsorry I meant our future
>>17061981and speed of light is what actually guards the randomness of certain events. else they would be predictable. the cone protecc
>>17061918Its not the same timeline if you can make changes. Either your future actions as a time traveler were always in your past, contributing to the future where you travel back in time, or they aren't, in which case the moment you pop out of your time machine you're not in the same timeline.
>>17061940/thread/It's time (pun intended) to stop mystifying time.
>>17061986Why is the past light cone the same size as the future?I can learn about much more history than I can future events. Shouldn't the past have a much larger light cone than the future? Can all future information be predicted, if all past information history is known?
>>17062213>Can all future information be predicted, if all past information history is known?nope. just predict when an atom will decay. you can't. tie a radioactive atom to a detector that triggers a gun that shoots you in the leg. can you predict if you go to hospital tomorrow or not? you know the state of the system.
>>17061918there is no time.. only distance
bump
Time travel could only work without there being paradoxes. If paradoxes were a thing then you would never even be allowed into the past; you would keep preventing yourself from going into the past. When you go into the past you’re really just going into a whole new temporal line. A different slice of our universe.
>>17061940can’t you just load a sort of saved state to reality and proceed from there?
>>17065649Bro what? There is only one state that everything occupies and that is the very current moment that everything exists in.
>>17065651not true, we know the universe can be stateless as it was before time, so that statelessness still exists alongside our time bound state, we just have to cross the border of time
>>17065653>we know that in a magical made-up reality shrek is real so we just have to make a magic portal into the magic land and we can meet shrek
>>17061918>backwards no>forwards yeswhy is this so hard for you retards to understand?
>>17065654>make a magic portal into the magic land and we can meet shrekThat's a more acceptable scientific aspiration than what AI.
>>17065658I'll quickly shit on your idea so we can move on1. Your idea of "statelessness" is preposterous, as that would necessitate the lack of existence of absolutely everything, which is a fundamental impossibility2. Time is a relative measurement, there is no such thing as "before time", if you want a reality without time you need a reality without any motion, but a reality without any motion would, quite literally, not exist, as no motion would mean there is no work, which means there is no energy, which just so happens to be the kind of thing that everything is made out of
>>17065662We literally had that before the Big Bang, why are you so arrogant?
>>170656681. The big bang is a hypothesis2. The big bang theory doesn't say anything about the universe prior to the condensed state
>>17061918No.
>>17065669> The big bang theory doesn't say anything about the universe prior to the condensed stateIt really bothers me how many people refuse to accept this. "But what happened BEFORE the big bang?!" If we knew that it wouldn't be called the fucking big bang cosmology and would be a part of our existing framework.
>>17065669It being a hypothesis is just a hypothesis
>>17065739Not only that it doesn't even say or presume that there isn't a wider cosmos outside our local universe, only that we were probably a hot ball at some point.
>>17061942>how could a wormhole send you backwards(or for*wards) in time?If theoretically you could do faster-than-light travel to a planet visible to earth, and whipped your dick out to expose yourself the astronomers here, then it would appear as though you had been there for years to all of the astronomers since light takes so long to reach them. It would appear as though you had traveled backwards in time if you "went through the wormhole."Other anons are right, real time travel isn't possible. Time travel sci-fi is good only because it explores theoretical problems and ideas about the distant future.
>>17061918Yes, because of locality. Our Earth can change in the short term of outlooks to the observer.
>>17061918a time loop paradox is impossible because the probability of creating an identical situation to the one that led the world to its exact state when you went back is zero.>b-but the initial timeline was affected by the one who went back in timethen how did the loop start in the first place?it's retarded and scifi authors need to stop doing it.the only way time travel makes sense is if the traveler is severed from their original timeline and redirects the world into a distinct timeline which they are now stuck in. and no they don't disappear if they stop their parents from getting married.
