People started dragging shit out and hiding information. Look at the math controversy right now. Math isn't secret, the equations and stuff are all public knowledge. But people are crying that AI is being used. Dragging it out for careers and press tours. The whole point of the internet was to share research and people started gatekeeping for status and money. And it slowed everyone down. When COVID happened everyone got together and put together a cure, pretty quickly and worked together. So no matter your views on COVID the response, containment and collaboration show what people can to as long as they aren't chasing fame.
