>>17068078I sort of empathize with your notion here—math ultimately comes down to the art of quantifying physical things. Like basically Math boils down to Metrology. That does have a nugget of truthbut the idea of “Pure Math” admits this world of logic and set theory and making definitions of elaborate constructs like real numbers and imaginary numbers and complex numbers and then equations for all those things. Pure math is a game one plays with the rules (axioms) and that game gets very very complicated, and I think it is good for people to play very complex games like that, whether or not the game corresponds to anything in real life. Magnus Carlsen is a badass, according to my rating system, and he studies the relatively brainlet rules of Chess. He’s still a fucking beast
