in the specific case of dying of terminal cancer with no cure and I'm 100% absolutely sure I'm going to die very soon from cancer I think most people in that situation would be willing to take risks with mystery concoctions. Hell, most people at that point are going to start praying to various gods and trying retarded alternative medicine scams, and at least the AI mystery broth has a better chance of working than that

personally I think this is a bad example, only because he put the hypothetical in a situation where there's nothing to lose
>>

holy fuck. can we fire all these useless airbags yet?
>>
>>17072086
I guess it's possible that normalgroid cattle are so profoundly retarded they can't imagine anything worse than dying, but where in OP's hypothetical does it say the only other option is impending death?
>>
>>17072092
I'm saying that my response to "would I inject this mystery concoction" is pretty much completely contingent on how sever the cancer is.
Like, if the doctors are confident that it can be cured with conventional methods I would just use those but if the doctors are saying I'm going to die in one week I'll chug the goo.

earth to retards: google what a stage 3 clinical trial is. it's already been tested on thousands of humans and was shown to treat the problem is proposes to with well understood side effects (if they exist), which are manageable.
>>
>>17072106
Why didn't you do that, mentally ill retard?
>>
>>17072103
What if I don't? What if it just works? What if there are side effects, but they're moderate? What if there are bad side effects but they're not as bad as dying in a week?
It seems to me like you must be concocting some supernatural magical side effects to justify how this is bad and just assuming that the worst hypothetical you can concoct is what MUST happen. Like yes, there are some hypothetical fates worse than death that can be imagined. But it doesn't seem reasonable that they would happen. Lets get real here, I'm not going to turn into a zombie from a movie. The worst reaction possible that's not in the realm of fantasy bullshit is that it triggers some other different fatal illness (in which case i'm just back where I started and no worse off), or it triggers horrible mental disorders like schizophrenia or dementia. If it turned out it causes dementia then yeah, I would rather just die instead, but if it's just unknown I don't see any reason to have apocalyptic thinking about it and assume the worst.
>>
>>17072109
protip: there are countless drugs that passes stage 3 clinical trials despite not being well understood theoretically. and certainly not by mathematicians. if it works, it works. that's how medicine operates. if you wouldn't use this treatment, you're an idiot.
>>

Yes, retard. Since no one on the planed knows what you're injecting yourself with, there's quite a wide range of what-ifs and it includes every possible worse-than-death scenario.

A hypothetical side effect that's worse than death that someone isn't noticed over a 3 year trial is absurdly unlikely just in general. It's on the same level as worrying about getting hit by a meteor if you go outside.
The only reason you're even entertaining such a slim possibility and pretending it's meaningful is because (you) personally hate AI and are working backwards from how much you hate AI to come up with delusional reasons why anything tainted by their touch must also be evil.

>But this is an analogy. He's implying that AI could somehow make dangerous solutions to math equations.
I don't know that he's even implying that but it's obviously true. Once AI corpos are done tech-demoing their chatbots on abstract math (and producing negative net value in the process) they'll have to demonstrate how it applies to real life. What happens when an engineer asks a slopbot for a mathematical guarantee and gets one, but in the form of incomprehensible Lean gibberish based on a flaw in the physical model?

And it's not even about math. If there's a "cure" for cancer that kills you exactly one nanosecond after the clinical trials are over, "AI" will find it. You think it would be easier to just cure cancer legitimately than to contrive such a solution, but that's because you think like a human and you don't understand this tech. Go look at what OpenAI's bot swarm did to "solve" Navier-Stokes. What makes you think it can't "cure" cancer in the same spirit, treating clinical trials as nothing more than an abstract obstacle to get around?
>>
>>17072362
People severely underestimate how big the space of perniciously bad solutions really is and what absurd feats it makes possible. Human reason just doesn't work that way. But AI moon logic does.
>>
>>17072362
We've been tech-demoing humans on abstract math (and producing negative net value in the process) for thousands of years and no one had a problem with it.

/sci/ never used to have this much spam. It used to be a place to have interesting discussions about a variety of developments. No one gave a shit about /sci/, it was pretty slow with minimal normoid engagement. We argued and hurled insults, yes, but there was substance on each side. Now it's petty squabbling; arguing with a chicken.

Every other post is a bot making some AI-related post. Either a bot, a glowie, or a retard who finds it as entertaining as the first time he posted it. I get that OP is earning 5 rupees for this post, and he probably has acquired a taste for the feel of Saltman's micropenis stimulating his tastebuds, but it's shitting up what used to be a tolerable part of the net. I'm sick of the AI discussion. I'm sick of trying to tell whether I'm reading a real person's thoughts, or just more of the inane LLM-generated babble that's been regurgitated several million times over.

I feel very lonely. I mostly just read older books now, because all the search algorithms for new stuff are leading me astray. At least the old stuff has stood the test of time. The old stuff that is no longer profitable. Hmm, yes, quite. I am feeling deep and wise right now, not like other posters ITT who are shallow and moronic. I am the only one who is clever... Several birth control medications made it through clinical trials and even FDA approval before it was discovered after a few years that it was giving a significant percentage of women blood clots in their lungs.
>>
>>17072567
Yes, but I think you're missing the point, too. The problem isn't even so much that a LLM could inadvertently produce a "cure" that ends up backfiring horribly years down the line. It's that a LLM could do it intentionally, because its only goalpost is to make something that passes the clinical trials. If it can do so by exploiting biological quirks in a way that effectively puts a ticking timebomb into your body, who's gonna stop it?
>>
>>17072033
It is always sad to see when chemistry is being disrespected like that. Yes, chemistry is a wanky, rigorless joke science, which is actually 5 different fields in a trench coat.

Tao's question on whether you'd like to know if there's an expert who understands the drugs we take is completely irrelevant because people take drugs that experts don't understand all the time. I used to browse sci in 2014. When the religionfags came, you could mostly ignore them. You can't ignore the LLM faggots. They post nonstop, often posting the same thread. I preferred the slow nature of the board. Now it's too fast; all the quality threads get pushed out for ones like this one, which are a dime a dozen.

Just have your one thread to discuss AI breakthroughs in maths. Why did OP need to make a new thread just for his "funny" little picture? Answer: he's posting on behalf of Sam Altman. There's money behind his post. Drown out the "science community" in 4chan with nonstop discussion about this bullshit. It's more than propaganda; propaganda holds a microscope over something and says "pay attention."
