As a professional mathematician, these past months have been truly soul-crushing, to the point where I'm finding almost impossible to concentrate and do my job anymore. Does anyone here have any reason why we should not feel like everything we've worked for during our careers is just suddenly going down in flames whole the public cheers our destruction?

I think what makes this truly horrific is to see just how many people, even in math subreddits like this, apparently hate the idea of there being a community of professional scholars who work on mathematics. I truly do not understand why people are coming here to cheer gleefully at this destruction. We should all be showing solidarity with each other at this time: artists, scholars, writers, taxi drivers, etc., etc.

Tl;dr: Does anyone have any thoughts that will make this not feel like we're living through the literal end of the world?

First of all, you're getting upset over bot-generated online garbage. Most real people are indifferent or slightly sympathetic. Secondly, trying to replace mathematicians is a losing game in the long term. Nobody competent believes it will work. Yes, these corpos are doing damage to the entire field because it suits their marketing needs, but they can only do it so many times before it stops being impressive and they're forced to move on to damaging other fields.

>Does anyone have any thoughts that will make this not feel like we're living through the literal end of the world?
Yes. But first you must abandon this notion that mathematics is as important as you believe it is. It's as useless as philosophy.
>But it's used in physics and chemistry and...
Not in the way you study it. That's why openai isn't cracking any open questions in physics or chemistry. Mathematics is a useless discipline designed only for masturbation.

This is a place where people who finished a shitty engineering degree come to pompously profess their dislike of mainstream maths and science in order to act as if they are not retarded midwits shunned by those with half a braincell. Do not try to find anything of use here.

It's a stupid thing that humans do mathematics since our brain is slow as shit. Let the machines do the theorem proving for us.

>I truly do not understand why people are coming here to cheer gleefully at this destruction

most people are simply envious of those who are higher than them in intellectual development. and when bad times start for the person you envy, you feel good. this is simply human biology.

second, mathematics is truly dead in the form we knew it. just like programming and software engineering died about a year ago when ai agents became very good at writing code. this is the harsh truth you need to accept.

>most people are simply envious of those who are higher than them in intellectual development.

that explained all the ai hate actually

>Does anyone here have any reason why we should not feel like everything we've worked for during our careers is just suddenly going down in flames whole the public cheers our destruction?
Because that is precisely what's happening.
The public cares nothing about mathematics (ask yourself how many people liked math back in school) and is currently seeing you as whining luddites whose existence contributes nothing to their welfare other than lording over them as intellectual superiors. Whereas your fall becomes a milestone to the advent of more powerful AI which can contribute significantly to their welfare.

Yes. Even though I like automated mathematics this past month has been humiliation ritual for the whole mathematicial community. It bothered me how bitter normies are and their apathy.
>>
>be mathematician
>alienate normies with unnecessary autistic rigor and formalism
>develop ego the size of africa
>implement ego into a programmable language to automate proofs
>ai automatically generates proofs better than mathematicians

A mathematician ended up with my childhood crush. I never held it against him or anything and now I feel pity for him (she's constantly posting about how autistic she is, literally.) Now I feel even worse for him. Oh well.
>>
>>17074458
You are not going to like it but what happens in mathematics eventually doesn't stay in mathematics. All the hanging fruits its collecting will be eventually used by the AI to do the same thing that has happened now.

I saw that. The desperate grasping by these narcissists are unreal.

bro autistic girlfriends are the best though?
>>
>>17074514
You are blaming your own fault on others. Instead of math it's your own patience that gatekept you from it. Now ask the AI and it will do the same to you.
>>
>>17074520
She is constantly posting about how quirky she is with her ADHD and Autism while saying "people just don't get it." She's also a huge fucking weeb.
>>
Just let RSI destroy everything. So many retards talking about ego or humbleness will get fucked by it and then the larpers will get exposed.
>>
>>17074522
my own fault for what? i double majored in math and physics. i literally never used anything from upper level math in any of my research, and i'm a theoretical physicist. i guess you can say i used contour integrals for dimensional regularization, but i never had to prove it like in complex analysis. you could also say i had to use some things like the fast fourier transform for monte carlo implementation. again, never had to prove the uses like i did in numerical analysis. if even theoretical physicists, which is the closest discipline to yours, can successfully do research without your formalism, then you need to face the facts here.

this doesn't even begin to address your attempt at an uno reverse card:
>wdym math is an issue
>i'm not at fault here
>it's your own fault!
>you can't do what i do teehee
(actually, i can, and i did--i just find it useless beyond masturating)
>>
>>17074436
i am a mathematican and see pedophilic elites running a massive psyop, and you fell for it. You absolute mark. The internet is dead and shills and bots do it for free.
>>
>>17074528
So you only see math as a tool. Yeah, that doesn't bother me but why do you even do theoretical physics? Certainly many of your field's results won't be applied in the real world for a long time just as new mathematics isn't useful until someone applies it to physics or some other field. What are you going to do once AI starts printing out thousands of alternative theories of gravity that match empirical observations? Will the same apathy you're showing toward mathematics now be directed at your own field with people dismissing it as useless?
>>
>>17074436
what does the picrel mean
>>
>>17074536
you have no idea what you're talking about. mathematicians do mathematics to jerk off. physicists do physics to uncover truths about reality. poll physicists and ask them how they'd feel if an ai found an indisputable proof of a theory of everything. they'd be overwrought with joy. unlike mathematicians who cry themselves to sleep upon having their open problems solved.

the divide here is that you don't understand the motivation of physicists. you don't understand our discipline, how we utilize math as a tool, nor do you understand how we reason through things. the reason ai cracked your field is because of your lean language. i'd be thoroughly surprised if it can do the same for physics.

mathematicians have been whining about the lack of formal, mathematical rigor in physics for decades, particularly in qft. working with infinity is a slippery business, especially when you renormalize, introduce ghost fields, regularize and so on.

a better argument you should be making is the CURRENT public opinion about the large hadron collider. people routinely ask me why it should be funded, what's the point, what does it offer society. the answer is simple, to me. international public relations and providing physicists the opportunity to experience other cultures. ai cannot do that for you.

do you understand the difference yet? physics has real, measurable, tangible impacts on reality and culture. mathematics can not do this. and no, going to a conference is not the same as living in a foreign country for three years doing research as part of an international collaboration of thousands of people.

another mathie proving he only cares about his ego lmfao

NTA but just because of this post I’m going to kek extra hard when your field gets annihilated in the exact same manner as mathematics.

"people routinely ask me why it should be funded, what's the point, what does it offer society. the answer is simple, to me. international public relations and providing physicists the opportunity to experience other cultures"

You really shouldn't give an answer like this to too many people, since you're kind of giving more ammunition for people defunding physics, since the average person doesn't care about international relations or you experiencing other cultures. But probably you mean friends who have asked you, in which case it is fine, since there is space for nuance

>just like programming and software engineering died about a year ago when ai agents became very good at writing code
In what world? At work we're still getting paid well to write code, except now we can be more efficient, by using AI whenever it makes sense to (while carefully avoiding the slop)
Mathematicians also have a choice of adopting AI and becoming more efficient at what they do, or retiring.
