This Thiel-backed startup says its AI can find a 14 point IQ gap between your embryos
it's called Nucleus and their tagline is literally "have your best baby"
> you do a round of IVF and end up with a bunch of embryos
> you send Nucleus the DNA data for each one, up to 20 embryos
> its AI reads more than 7 million spots in each embryo's DNA and compares them to what it learned from more than a million people
> then each embryo gets scored on things like IQ, disease risk, hair color and eye color
> you pick the one you want implanted

scoring your embryos starts at about $6,000
every one of these embryos is naturally yours btw, with zero gene editing involved
America's main medical genetics group says this is moving too fast with too little evidence
but that hasn't slowed Nucleus down at all
when the founder announced this new AI, he wrote "AI is rapidly getting smarter... Now, humanity can too."
>>
cool but what about penis size?
that's more important than intelligence for a man let's be honest.

>compares them to what it learned from more than a million people
A bit skeptical that's going to accomplish what they think it will accomplish but we won't even be able to test it for years when those children are old enough to be IQ tested. Even then, it will be iffy due to confounding factors such as the parental intelligence level of those who would use this service not being reflective of the general population.
>>
>>17086847
That's past tense, you would have noticed that if you had been screened (and discarded for low IQ)

Prolly more like 25%, at least in males maybe closer to 50% in women but still lower
>>
>>17086860
No, it's at least 50% and only 10% is attributable to environmental factors.

Well regardless as to people produce children, you'll probably need embryos and so you'll have to choose which embryo to gestate. And so long as you need to make that choice you might as well pick the best one.

sounds cool I'm sure some girl will really enjoy this, hopefully she doesn't get stuck with 20tuplets somehow

>the whole movie and story was an argument against eugenics based on anecdotal evidence about the value of effort, inadvertently becoming one of the best advocacy pieces in media in favor of eugenics, because it never tried to disprove it on principle.
Many such cases.

Why so much doubt that they could improve the IQ of offspring by selecting the embryo with particular genes?

We know there is a big genetic component to IQ. In more recent history, they have done genome wide association studies that look for small effects from many many genes. This reveals many specific genes that have effects on IQ.

Why doubt that picking embryos with the specific genes we see associated with IQ would not lead to a high IQ child?
>>
>>17086825
Still a total lottery. Also even if this does have a high probability of picking 115 IQ+ embryos, household and family dynamics can and will fuck up those future kids (or anyone) up.
>>
>>17087496
>Why so much doubt that they could improve the IQ of offspring by selecting the embryo with particular genes?
Because it's extremely complex and merely carrying some SNPs doesn't even guarantee that considering you'd have to account for everything else. There's also a finite number of eggs so if you get the "right combination" but the embryo developed into a child with a chronic condtion you could not fully select against you'd have to find another viable one and roll the die.

>We know there is a big genetic component to IQ.
It's not only genetic but a ton of other ones like environmental, social, and more.
>they have done genome wide association studies that look for small effects from many many genes. This reveals many specific genes that have effects on IQ.
It's not a "this one gives a boost".

>Why doubt that picking embryos with the specific genes we see associated with IQ would not lead to a high IQ child?
It's still a gamble and if it goes bad then the company will provably get sued real hard due to lack of tangible results or accidentally selecting for a kid with dick rot or chronic esrly onset arthritis.
>>
>>17087448
Its a good iniciative regardless.
>>17086825
I aleays think its bizarre how we have that for cattle but not for humans.
>>
>>17087521
> considering you'd have to account for everything else
Why would you have to consider everything else? Alleles are mostly additive, meaning they don't interact in complex ways. They just contribute or detract from a trait.

>the embryo developed into a child with a chronic condtion you could not fully select against you'd have to find another viable one
I don't understand why you are mentioning this. Yeah they have genetic screening for all kinds of things. These companies look at a bunch of traits, not only for IQ. Genetic screening for a bunch of common genetic diseases is standard in mainstream medicine already.

>It's not only genetic but a ton of other ones like environmental, social, and more.
Well, no. It's all relative. So if genes are a bigger factor than necessarily other things become smaller factors.

The non-genetic component isn't necessarily anything obvious or detectible. A lot of the non-genetic parts are random biological things, or measurement error. The common stuff people think of when they think of environment, like how your parents raised you, ends up being a very small part of the non-genetic component.

>It's not a "this one gives a boost".
It is though. That's actually what researchers discovered. It's surprising but true. And there are good evolutionary reasons why genes would work that way: complex traits dependent on the presence of other genes would not survive natural selection.

>It's still a gamble and if it goes bad then the company will provably get sued real hard due to lack of tangible results or accidentally selecting for a kid with dick rot or chronic esrly onset arthritis.
It's pretty far fetched that, if you were selecting among ~10 embryos, picking the one with slightly higher IQ could go so catastrophically wrong that you pick a kid with a debilitating issue. I mean if it was just useless it would be picking a random child, whats the base rate of your weird ideas like "dick rot"? Pretty much 0 right?
>>
>>17086825
If they all selected high IQ people then all their embryo's should make % more stupid people to even the population out, and we should be back to where we are, but a little better because we put some effort into the child's life.
>>
>>17087531
>Its a good iniciative regardless

Of course it would be. So, what exactly stops the kakistocracy from scoring your embryos based on metrics that interest them (social agreeableness, risk aversion, conformism, domestication, submission to authority, aphantasia etc.) while telling you they're just selecting for intelligence?
