>>35074658Federated protocols, especially when referring to messaging/social media, allow anyone to run a server implementing the protocol, and users on different servers can still communicate with each other (barring any intentional defederation from the server). The advantage (to me) is you can pick and choose an instance that has rules/location/performance/etc. that are palatable to you and still talk to anyone in the larger ecosystem. You're not at the behest of whatever new feature/policy/"values" Discord or whatever rolls out. If you don't like one server, you can just sign up at another one.When I say privacy-friendly, I'm mostly using it synonymously with E2E encryption (the server can't read the content of your messages, only metadata). Of course for federated protocols different servers have different privacy policies/considerations, but E2EE seems like a baseline level of privacy to me in the modern day. Discord can read everything you send, and that's weird. Matrix has E2EE in its protocol, and most XMPP clients implement OMEMO by now.
