I had a cat that was eighteen years old. He recently passed away this June. I never saw a cat grow old to the point he could not function. It was honestly the most depressing moment this year. The way he would lie in the litterbox since moving was so much pain. The way he would throw himself onto the floor and flop when he was excited, I was going to feed him. His meows were silent and when there was noise, it was just scratchy. Admittedly, I found him annoying at first. When he got here last year, his owner, my roommate, would not clean up after him. Morning after morning I would step onto the loose litter in the hallway. I remember getting so fed up over it but always kept it to myself when I cleaned up after it. Even after being gone from home for a week, I came to my spot on the couch having nothing but cat snot on it with dried shit on the cushioning, I was beyond upset but I made sure to understand he is just an old man. Someone who kept me company through a lot of lonely nights. I remember all the times I would sit out in the living room, grinding AimLabs, he would come sit beside me just to feel the warmth of the laptop. I remember going back to my room to get him the heating pad just so he can be absolutely more comfortable. I also remember all the times he would sit in the empty gunpla boxes or even my college suitcase if I was in the kitchen. He left his mark on me honestly. I could not believe it. I was there when he was euthanized. Died with his eyes open. He always slept with his eyes open. A part of me wanted to call my ex-girlfriend to let her know he is gone and I need help with coping, but I wanted to keep his passing peaceful externally and internally. If she does read this, I thought it was really funny that he would try to bite you when you did not feed him the Chinese food we would order. He really was the oldest looking cat we have ever seen. Rest in peace. I will catch up with you sometime Theo.
